Ibn Sina (Avicenna) Born

Ibn Sina (Avicenna), perhaps the most famous Muslim polymath, was born in Bukhara. His 'Canon of Medicine' (Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb) became the standard medical textbook in European and Islamic universities for centuries. His philosophical 'Book of Healing' covered logic, mathematics, and metaphysics. He wrote over 450 works on diverse subjects.

Algerian War of Independence Begins

The National Liberation Front (FLN) launched an armed struggle against French colonial rule in Algeria. The brutal eight-year war ended with Algerian independence in 1962 CE. It was the most decolonization conflict in French Africa, causing an estimated 300,000 to 1 million Algerian deaths and leading to the exodus of most European settlers (pieds-noirs).

Second Arab Siege of Constantinople

A massive Umayyad army and fleet besieged Constantinople for over a year. Byzantine defenders used Greek fire effectively. The arrival of Bulgarian allies and winter relief finally broke the siege. Muslim forces suffered heavy losses, and this failure marked the limit of Umayyad expansion into Europe.
