- Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, Yazid ibn Muawiya, Muawiya II
Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, son of a senior companion of the Prophet, refused to accept Yazid as caliph and stayed in Mecca. After Yazid died in 683 CE (64 AH), Ibn al-Zubayr declared himself caliph. Many provinces in the Hejaz, Iraq and parts of Egypt accepted his authority, although much of it was nominal. He ruled from Mecca until the Umayyad general al-Hajjaj besieged the city and Ibn al-Zubayr was killed in 692 CE.
Why it matters
His rival caliphate deepened the Second Fitna, and it lasted until the Umayyads under Abd al-Malik killed him in 692.
