Ahmad ibn Hanbal died in Baghdad in 855. He refused to accept the Abbasid state doctrine that the Quran was created, and this stance led to imprisonment and flogging during the mihna. His Musnad, a large hadith collection, was arranged and completed by his son. The Hanbali school of law, named after him, became one of the four main Sunni schools.

Why it matters

The Hanbali school of law took its name from him and remains one of the four main Sunni schools.
