The Al-Aqsa Mosque stands on the southern part of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Umayyad caliphs Abd al-Malik and his son al-Walid I are credited with building it. Sources differ on the completion date, placing it around 705 CE or as late as 715 CE. The mosque was built as a large congregational mosque, and it has been rebuilt and enlarged several times since.
Why it matters
The mosque became one of the holiest sites in Islam and a major center of worship in Jerusalem.
