Abu Rayhan al-Biruni was born in Kath, in the Khwarazm region of present-day Uzbekistan. Most sources give 4 September 973 CE. He studied astronomy, mathematics, geography and history, and he wrote about instruments and methods of astronomy. His book on India describes Indian religion, science and customs in detail. He spent much of his life at courts in Central Asia and India.
Why it matters
His writings on India and on measuring the Earth are among the most important works of medieval science.
