Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi completed his medical encyclopedia, al-Tasrif, in Cordoba around the year 1000. The work has thirty sections, and one part covers surgery. It includes drawings of surgical instruments and describes methods for setting bones and cauterizing wounds. The text was translated into Latin and used in European surgery for centuries.
