On 1 November 1954 CE, armed groups of the National Liberation Front (FLN) launched coordinated attacks across Algeria, which was then governed as part of France. The war lasted more than seven years. France deployed hundreds of thousands of troops, and many civilians were killed on both sides. Algeria became independent in July 1962, following the Evian Accords of March 1962.

Why it matters

The war ended French rule and produced an independent Algeria with a Muslim majority, shaping French politics for decades.
