Sharif Hussein ibn Ali, the Hashemite ruler of Mecca, launched a revolt against the Ottoman Empire in June 1916 CE. His sons Ali and Faisal attacked the Ottoman garrison at Medina on 5 June, and Hussein proclaimed the revolt in Mecca on 10 June. Britain provided money, weapons and advisers, including T. E. Lawrence. Arab forces fought in the Hejaz and later moved north into Syria. The revolt lasted until the end of the war in 1918.

Why it matters

The revolt helped the Allies weaken Ottoman control in the Arab provinces and set the stage for the postwar division of the region.
