About 313 Muslims faced a larger Quraysh army of roughly 1,000 men near the wells of Badr, southwest of Medina. The Muslims won a decisive victory, and many Quraysh leaders were killed, including Abu Jahl. About 70 prisoners were taken, and some were later freed for ransom or for teaching reading and writing. The Quran refers to the battle as the Day of Criterion (8:41).
Why it matters
The victory gave the Muslim community in Medina new standing and weakened Quraysh authority in the region.
