Expulsion of Banu Nadir from Medina
- Date
- August 625 CERabi' al-Awwal 4 AH1,401 years ago
- Place
- Medina
- People
- Prophet Muhammad, Huyayy ibn Akhtab
The Jewish tribe of Banu Nadir lived in Medina and held fortified settlements near the city. Muslim sources accuse them of plotting against Prophet Muhammad and of breaking the terms of the agreement with Medina. After a siege, the tribe agreed to leave. Many members moved to Khaybar or to Syria, and they were allowed to take some of their belongings. The main account comes from later Muslim historians.
Why it matters
The expulsion removed a powerful rival in Medina and reduced the risk of an internal alliance against the Muslims.
