Banu Qurayza was a Jewish tribe in Medina that had a treaty with the Muslims. During the Battle of the Trench, some of its leaders secretly agreed to help the attackers. After the Muslims besieged their fortresses, the tribe surrendered. Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, an ally of the tribe, was asked to judge their case, and he ruled that the men be executed and the property divided. Historians debate the number killed and the accuracy of the accounts.
Why it matters
The case ended the threat of an internal alliance during the Trench siege and remains one of the most debated episodes of the early period.
