Muslim Campaigns in the Caucasus
- Date
- 654 CE34 AH1,372 years ago
- Place
- Caucasus region (Azerbaijan, Dagestan)
Arab armies pushed into the Caucasus from the 640s, through Armenia and Azerbaijan and into the mountain passes near Derbent. Many local princes accepted Muslim overlords and paid tribute. Control was never firm. The region saw repeated revolts and raids by the Khazars over the following decades. Sources for the campaigns are fragmentary.
Why it matters
The campaigns brought local princes under Umayyad overlordship, but control stayed weak and was often contested.
