After Quraysh broke the truce of Hudaybiyyah, Prophet Muhammad marched on Mecca with about 10,000 followers. Most accounts say the city surrendered with little fighting. The Prophet pardoned most of the Quraysh leaders and entered the Kaaba, where he ordered the idols around it removed. Abu Sufyan converted to Islam. Most sources give 20 Ramadan 8 AH, which is 11 January 630 CE.
Why it matters
Mecca came under Muslim control, and many Arab tribes soon accepted Islam, which spread across the peninsula.
