Darul Uloom Deoband, the Islamic seminary, was founded on 31 May 1866 in Deoband, north of Delhi. A group of scholars led by Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi and Rashid Ahmad Gangohi set it up after the failed revolt of 1857. The school became one of the most influential centers of Islamic learning in South Asia. Its graduates founded many seminaries across the subcontinent.
