The Burj Khalifa in Dubai officially opened on 4 January 2010 CE. At about 828 meters, it became the tallest structure in the world. It was developed by Emaar Properties. The tower was renamed from Burj Dubai on the opening day to honor Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the UAE. The building combines offices, a hotel and residences.
Why it matters
It set a new benchmark for skyscraper engineering and became a symbol of Dubai's economic growth.
