- Abd al-Rahman I
Abd al-Rahman I began building the Great Mosque of Cordoba in 785. The site was first shared with a Visigothic church, which the emir later bought and demolished. The mosque grew over the following centuries, and its hall of double-tiered arches became one of the defining spaces of Islamic architecture in Spain. Parts of the building were later converted into a cathedral.
Why it matters
Its striped double arches became a model for later mosques in the western Islamic world.
