The Battle of Hattin took place near the Sea of Galilee on 4 July 1187. Saladin's army defeated the Crusader forces, and King Guy of Jerusalem was captured. Most of the Crusader field army was destroyed in the fighting. The victory opened the way for Muslim forces to take most of the coastal towns and Jerusalem in the months that followed.
Why it matters
The loss of the Crusader army at Hattin led directly to the Muslim recovery of Jerusalem later in 1187.
