In 628 CE, Prophet Muhammad set out for Mecca with about 1,400 followers to perform Umrah. Quraysh stopped them at Hudaybiyyah, just outside the city. After long talks, both sides agreed to a ten-year truce. Its terms seemed unfavorable to the Muslims, but it allowed them to visit Mecca the following year. Surah Al-Fath (48:1) was revealed on the return journey.
Why it matters
The truce gave Medina recognized standing with Quraysh and set the stage for the peaceful entry into Mecca two years later.
