Place

Soon after the conquest of Mecca, the Hawazin and Thaqif tribes gathered an army to attack the Muslims. The Muslims advanced into a valley at Hunayn, where the enemy had hidden archers in the ravines. Many Muslims fled at first, but Prophet Muhammad and a small group held their position. The army then regrouped and won the battle. The Quran refers to the battle in Surah At-Tawbah (9:25-26).

Why it matters

The victory secured the region around Mecca and Taif and ended a major tribal challenge to Muslim power in western Arabia.
