Ali ibn Hazm died in August 1064 in al-Andalus. He was a jurist of the Zahiri school, which relied on the apparent meaning of the Quran and hadith. He wrote al-Muhalla, a large legal work, and Tawq al-Hamama, a treatise on love. He also wrote Kitab al-Fisal, a study of religions and sects. Sources differ on the town where he died.
Why it matters
His Zahiri method, based on the apparent meaning of the texts, is a distinct strand in Sunni legal history.
