Conquest of Khaybar

Date
628 CE7 AH1,398 years ago
Place
Khaybar, north of Medina
People
Prophet Muhammad, Ali ibn Abi Talib

Khaybar was a fortified oasis about 150 kilometers north of Medina, home to Jewish communities that had sided with enemies of the Muslims. The Muslims besieged its forts, and several strongholds fell one after another. The local population agreed to give half of their produce in return for keeping their land. This arrangement lasted until the caliphate of Umar.

Why it matters

The conquest brought large wealth and land to the Muslim community and ended a major center of opposition in the north.
