The Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa took place on 16 July 1212 in the Sierra Morena. A Christian coalition led by Alfonso VIII of Castile defeated the Almohad army of Caliph Muhammad al-Nasir. The battle opened the road south into Andalusia for the Christian kingdoms. Almohad power in al-Andalus declined in the years that followed.
Why it matters
The defeat weakened Almohad control of al-Andalus and speeded the loss of cities to Christian rulers.
