- Musa ibn Nusayr, Tariq ibn Ziyad
Musa ibn Nusayr, the Umayyad governor of Ifriqiya, led campaigns across the Maghreb between about 705 and 709 CE. His forces reached the Atlantic coast of Morocco and advanced into the Sus valley. Many Berber groups accepted Islam and joined the Arab forces, which made the conquest easier. Musa later sent Tariq ibn Ziyad across to Iberia.
Why it matters
The conquest linked North Africa to the Umayyad state and supplied the troops and commanders for the invasion of Iberia.
