The Battle of Mu'tah took place in September 629 in the Balqa region east of the Jordan River. A small Muslim force led by Zayd ibn Haritha met a much larger Byzantine and Ghassanid army. Zayd, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and Abdullah ibn Rawaha were killed. Khalid ibn al-Walid later took command and withdrew the army safely.
Why it matters
It was an early clash between the Muslim army and a Byzantine-allied force, and it raised Khalid's reputation.
