Ali's army defeated a Kharijite force at the Nahrawan canal, east of present-day Baghdad, in July 658 CE, during Safar 38 AH. Ali had offered amnesty to those who would leave the rebellion, but many fighters refused. Most of the rebels were killed in the battle. Some Kharijite groups escaped, and they later returned to fight against Ali's successors.
Why it matters
The battle destroyed the main Kharijite army, but small groups survived and continued their attacks for years.
