In 31 AH (651 CE), Abdallah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Sarh led a Muslim army from Egypt into Nubia, the Christian kingdom south of Egypt. The army failed to take the capital, Dongola, and the Nubians resisted fiercely with archers. Both sides then agreed to a treaty known as the Baqt. It set terms for peace, trade and an annual exchange of goods, and it remained in force for centuries.
Why it matters
The Baqt agreement set the terms of relations between Egypt and Nubia for centuries.
