Pakistan became an independent state on 14 August 1947 CE as British rule in the Indian subcontinent ended. The All-India Muslim League had campaigned for a separate homeland for Muslims under Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The partition also created India and caused a mass movement of people across the new borders. Estimates of the dead range from hundreds of thousands to over a million. The date coincided with 27 Ramadan 1366 AH.

Pakistan became one of the world's largest Muslim-majority countries, and the partition displaced millions of people.
