Prophet Muhammad died in Medina in the house of his wife Aisha bint Abi Bakr, in the month of Rabi al-Awwal in 11 AH. Most sources give Monday, 12 Rabi al-Awwal, which is 8 June 632 CE. He was about 63 years old. Tradition says he died with his head resting on Aisha. In his final days, Abu Bakr led the prayers in the mosque.
Why it matters
His death raised the question of succession that shaped the early caliphate and the later split between Sunni and Shia Muslims.
