Construction of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina

After the Hijrah in 622, the Prophet Muhammad helped build a mosque in Medina on land near his home. The first mosque was a simple structure of palm trunks and mud brick, with an open courtyard. It became the center of worship, teaching and community affairs. The site is now the Prophet's Mosque, and it has been expanded many times.
Why it matters
The Prophet's Mosque remains the second holiest site in Islam, after the Sacred Mosque in Mecca.
