According to the account in Sahih al-Bukhari, Caliph Abu Bakr ordered the collection of Quranic material in 633. The order followed the Battle of Yamama, where many reciters died. Zayd ibn Thabit led the work. The collected sheets were kept first by Abu Bakr, then by Umar, and then by Hafsa. Later, under Uthman, a standard text was copied.
Why it matters
This early collection is the basis of the standard Quran text that Caliph Uthman later commissioned.
