Caliph Uthman ordered a committee led by Zayd ibn Thabit to produce a standard written text of the Quran. The committee used the copy compiled in the time of Abu Bakr. Copies were sent to major cities, and other written versions were ordered destroyed. Most Islamic sources date the work to 25 AH (646 CE). Some modern historians place it around 650 CE.
Why it matters
The standard text, known as the Uthmanic codex, became the basis for all later copies of the Quran.
