Rebellion Against Caliph Uthman
- Date
- 656 CE35 AH1,370 years ago
- Place
- Medina, with delegations from Egypt, Kufa and Basra
- People
- Uthman ibn Affan, Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, Ali ibn Abi Talib
Complaints against Uthman grew over his appointment of relatives from the Umayyad family to governorships and over his use of public funds. In 35 AH (656 CE), delegations from Egypt, Kufa and Basra arrived in Medina to present their grievances. Uthman was besieged in his house for several weeks. Negotiations failed, and the rebels refused to leave. Historians differ on how much each side was responsible.
Why it matters
The revolt and Uthman's killing split the Muslim community and led directly to the First Fitna.
