An Ottoman army under Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha besieged Vienna from 14 July 1683 CE. The city held for two months. On 12 September, a relief army led by Polish king Jan III Sobieski, together with Habsburg and German forces, attacked the Ottoman camp. The Ottomans were defeated and withdrew. Kara Mustafa was executed later in Belgrade.
Why it matters
The defeat began a long Ottoman retreat from Central Europe, confirmed by the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699.
