Suleiman I led an Ottoman army to Vienna in September 1529 CE. The siege ran from 27 September to mid-October. Heavy rain, shortages of supplies and the city's defenses defeated the attack, and the army withdrew. Sources give the end of the siege as 14 or 15 October. The campaign was one of the furthest Ottoman advances into Central Europe.
Why it matters
The failure set the limit of Ottoman expansion into Central Europe for the next century and a half.
