Transoxiana lay between the Oxus and Jaxartes rivers, in present-day Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. In 651 CE, Abdullah ibn Amir, governor of Basra, sent raiding forces into Khurasan, and Arab troops reached the region around Bukhara. The conquest was not complete for almost a century. Local rulers repeatedly revolted, and control of the area was contested for decades.
Why it matters
The campaigns opened a frontier that brought Islam and the Arabic language to Central Asia over the following century.
