Quraysh of Mecca marched on Medina to avenge their defeat at Badr. The Muslims first held their ground, but many archers left their posts to collect spoils. Khalid ibn al-Walid, then fighting for Quraysh, attacked from the rear. The Muslims suffered heavy losses, and Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib was killed. Prophet Muhammad was wounded but survived. The Quran refers to the battle in Surah Al Imran (3:121-122).
Why it matters
The defeat weakened Medina's position for a time and showed the cost of leaving a defensive position during battle.
