Abu Bakr died in August 634 CE after naming Umar ibn al-Khattab as his successor. Mainstream references date the start of Umar's caliphate to 23 August 634. Umar ruled for about ten years and extended the Islamic state into Syria, Iraq, Persia and Egypt. He set up a register of stipends from the public treasury and organized the administration of the new provinces. He was assassinated in 644.
Why it matters
