The Universal Islamic Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed in Paris on 19 September 1981. The Islamic Council of Europe issued the text, which was prepared by Muslim scholars and representatives of Islamic movements. It draws on the Quran and the Sunnah and lists rights in numbered articles, covering life, justice, equality and fair trial. It is one of several Islamic statements on human rights from the late twentieth century.
Why it matters
It was an early attempt by Muslim organizations to set out human rights in terms of Islamic law.
