In July 1908 CE, officers of the Committee of Union and Progress in Macedonia forced Sultan Abdul Hamid II to restore the 1876 constitution. The reformers, known as the Young Turks, promised equal rights for all Ottoman subjects. Parliament reopened and elections were held in late 1908. Political rivalries and military interventions followed, and the Committee took direct control of the government in 1913.
Why it matters
The revolution ended autocratic rule and started the constitutional era, which ended with the empire's collapse after World War I.
