الٓر ۚ
alif-lam-raAlif Laam Ra
تِلْكَ
til'kaThese
ءَايَـٰتُ
āyātu(are the) Verses
ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ
l-kitābi(of) the Book
ٱلْمُبِينِ
l-mubīni[the] clear
١
(1)
Alif, Lām, Rā. These are the verses of the clear Book.

إِنَّآ
innāIndeed, We
أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ
anzalnāhuWe have sent it down
قُرْءَٰنًا
qur'ānan(as) a Quran in Arabic
عَرَبِيًّۭا
ʿarabiyyan(as) a Quran in Arabic
لَّعَلَّكُمْ
laʿallakumso that you may
تَعْقِلُونَ
taʿqilūnaunderstand
٢
(2)
Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ān that you might understand.

نَحْنُ
naḥnuWe
نَقُصُّ
naquṣṣurelate
عَلَيْكَ
ʿalaykato you
أَحْسَنَ
aḥsanathe best
ٱلْقَصَصِ
l-qaṣaṣiof the narrations
بِمَآ
bimāin what
أَوْحَيْنَآ
awḥaynāWe have revealed
إِلَيْكَ
ilaykato you
هَـٰذَا
hādhā(of) this
ٱلْقُرْءَانَ
l-qur'ānathe Quran
وَإِن
wa-inalthough
كُنتَ
kuntayou were
مِن
minbefore it
قَبْلِهِۦ
qablihibefore it
لَمِنَ
laminasurely among
ٱلْغَـٰفِلِينَ
l-ghāfilīnathe unaware
٣
(3)
We relate to you, [O Muḥammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur’ān although you were, before it, among the unaware.

إِذْ
idhWhen
قَالَ
qālasaid
يُوسُفُ
yūsufuYusuf
لِأَبِيهِ
li-abīhito his father
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ
yāabatiO my father
إِنِّى
innīIndeed, I
رَأَيْتُ
ra-aytuI saw
أَحَدَ
aḥadaeleven
عَشَرَ
ʿasharaeleven
كَوْكَبًۭا
kawkabanstars
وَٱلشَّمْسَ
wal-shamsaand the sun
وَٱلْقَمَرَ
wal-qamaraand the moon
رَأَيْتُهُمْ
ra-aytuhumI saw them
لِى
to me
سَـٰجِدِينَ
sājidīnaprostrating
٤
(4)
[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father, "O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me."

قَالَ
qālaHe said
يَـٰبُنَىَّ
yābunayyaO my son
لَا
(Do) not
تَقْصُصْ
taqṣuṣrelate
رُءْيَاكَ
ru'yākayour vision
عَلَىٰٓ
ʿalāto
إِخْوَتِكَ
ikh'watikayour brothers
فَيَكِيدُوا۟
fayakīdūlest they plan
لَكَ
lakaagainst you
كَيْدًا ۖ
kaydana plot
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ
l-shayṭānathe Shaitaan
لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ
lil'insāni(is) to man
عَدُوٌّۭ
ʿaduwwunan enemy
مُّبِينٌۭ
mubīnunopen
٥
(5)
He said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy.

وَكَذَٰلِكَ
wakadhālikaAnd thus
يَجْتَبِيكَ
yajtabīkawill choose you
رَبُّكَ
rabbukayour Lord
وَيُعَلِّمُكَ
wayuʿallimukaand will teach you
مِن
minof
تَأْوِيلِ
tawīli(the) interpretation
ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ
l-aḥādīthi(of) the narratives
وَيُتِمُّ
wayutimmuand complete
نِعْمَتَهُۥ
niʿ'matahuHis Favor
عَلَيْكَ
ʿalaykaon you
وَعَلَىٰٓ
waʿalāand on
ءَالِ
āli(the) family
يَعْقُوبَ
yaʿqūba(of) Yaqub
كَمَآ
kamāas
أَتَمَّهَا
atammahāHe completed it
عَلَىٰٓ
ʿalāon
أَبَوَيْكَ
abawaykayour two forefathers
مِن
minbefore
قَبْلُ
qablubefore
إِبْرَٰهِيمَ
ib'rāhīmaIbrahim
وَإِسْحَـٰقَ ۚ
wa-is'ḥāqaand Isaac
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
رَبَّكَ
rabbakayour Lord
عَلِيمٌ
ʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
حَكِيمٌۭ
ḥakīmunAll-Wise
٦
(6)
And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives [i.e., events or dreams] and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise."

۞ لَّقَدْ
laqadCertainly
كَانَ
kānawere
فِى
in
يُوسُفَ
yūsufaYusuf
وَإِخْوَتِهِۦٓ
wa-ikh'watihiand his brothers
ءَايَـٰتٌۭ
āyātunsigns
لِّلسَّآئِلِينَ
lilssāilīnafor those who ask
٧
(7)
Certainly were there in Joseph and his brothers signs for those who ask, [such as]

إِذْ
idhWhen
قَالُوا۟
qālūthey said
لَيُوسُفُ
layūsufuSurely Yusuf
وَأَخُوهُ
wa-akhūhuand his brother
أَحَبُّ
aḥabbu(are) more beloved
إِلَىٰٓ
ilāto
أَبِينَا
abīnāour father
مِنَّا
minnāthan we
وَنَحْنُ
wanaḥnuwhile we
عُصْبَةٌ
ʿuṣ'batun(are) a group
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
أَبَانَا
abānāour father
لَفِى
lafī(is) surely in
ضَلَـٰلٍۢ
ḍalālinan error
مُّبِينٍ
mubīninclear
٨
(8)
When they said, "Joseph and his brother are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a clan. Indeed, our father is in clear error.

ٱقْتُلُوا۟
uq'tulūKill
يُوسُفَ
yūsufaYusuf
أَوِ
awior
ٱطْرَحُوهُ
iṭ'raḥūhucast him
أَرْضًۭا
arḍan(to) a land
يَخْلُ
yakhluso will be free
لَكُمْ
lakumfor you
وَجْهُ
wajhu(the) face
أَبِيكُمْ
abīkum(of) your father
وَتَكُونُوا۟
watakūnūand you will be
مِنۢ
minafter that
بَعْدِهِۦ
baʿdihiafter that
قَوْمًۭا
qawmana people
صَـٰلِحِينَ
ṣāliḥīnarighteous
٩
(9)
Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance [i.e., attention] of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people."

قَالَ
qālaSaid
قَآئِلٌۭ
qāiluna speaker
مِّنْهُمْ
min'humamong them
لَا
(Do) not
تَقْتُلُوا۟
taqtulūkill
يُوسُفَ
yūsufaYusuf
وَأَلْقُوهُ
wa-alqūhubut throw him
فِى
in
غَيَـٰبَتِ
ghayābatithe bottom
ٱلْجُبِّ
l-jubi(of) the well
يَلْتَقِطْهُ
yaltaqiṭ'huwill pick him
بَعْضُ
baʿḍusome
ٱلسَّيَّارَةِ
l-sayārati[the] caravan
إِن
inif
كُنتُمْ
kuntumyou are
فَـٰعِلِينَ
fāʿilīnadoing
١٠
(10)
Said a speaker among them, "Do not kill Joseph but throw him into the bottom of the well; some travelers will pick him up - if you would do [something]."

قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
يَـٰٓأَبَانَا
yāabānāO our father
مَا
Why
لَكَ
laka(do) you
لَا
not
تَأْمَ۫نَّا
tamannātrust us
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāwith
يُوسُفَ
yūsufaYusuf
وَإِنَّا
wa-innāwhile indeed, we
لَهُۥ
lahu(are) for him
لَنَـٰصِحُونَ
lanāṣiḥūnasurely well-wishers
١١
(11)
They said, "O our father, why do you not entrust us with Joseph while indeed, we are to him sincere counselors?

أَرْسِلْهُ
arsil'huSend him
مَعَنَا
maʿanāwith us
غَدًۭا
ghadantomorrow
يَرْتَعْ
yartaʿ(to) enjoy
وَيَلْعَبْ
wayalʿaband play
وَإِنَّا
wa-innāAnd indeed, we
لَهُۥ
lahufor him
لَحَـٰفِظُونَ
laḥāfiẓūna(will) surely (be) guardians
١٢
(12)
Send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play. And indeed, we will be his guardians."

قَالَ
qālaHe said
إِنِّى
innīIndeed, [I]
لَيَحْزُنُنِىٓ
layaḥzununīit surely saddens me
أَن
anthat
تَذْهَبُوا۟
tadhhabūyou should take him
بِهِۦ
bihiyou should take him
وَأَخَافُ
wa-akhāfuand I fear
أَن
anthat
يَأْكُلَهُ
yakulahuwould eat him
ٱلذِّئْبُ
l-dhi'bua wolf
وَأَنتُمْ
wa-antumwhile you
عَنْهُ
ʿanhuof him
غَـٰفِلُونَ
ghāfilūna(are) unaware
١٣
(13)
[Jacob] said, "Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are of him unaware."

قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
لَئِنْ
la-inIf
أَكَلَهُ
akalahueats him
ٱلذِّئْبُ
l-dhi'buthe wolf
وَنَحْنُ
wanaḥnuwhile we
عُصْبَةٌ
ʿuṣ'batun(are) a group
إِنَّآ
innāindeed, we
إِذًۭا
idhanthen
لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ
lakhāsirūnasurely (would be) losers
١٤
(14)
They said, "If a wolf should eat him while we are a [strong] clan, indeed, we would then be losers."

فَلَمَّا
falammāSo when
ذَهَبُوا۟
dhahabūthey took him
بِهِۦ
bihithey took him
وَأَجْمَعُوٓا۟
wa-ajmaʿūand agreed
أَن
anthat
يَجْعَلُوهُ
yajʿalūhuthey put him
فِى
in
غَيَـٰبَتِ
ghayābati(the) bottom
ٱلْجُبِّ ۚ
l-jubi(of) the well
وَأَوْحَيْنَآ
wa-awḥaynāBut We inspired
إِلَيْهِ
ilayhito him
لَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُم
latunabbi-annahumSurely, you will inform them
بِأَمْرِهِمْ
bi-amrihimabout this affair
هَـٰذَا
hādhāabout this affair
وَهُمْ
wahumwhile they
لَا
(do) not
يَشْعُرُونَ
yashʿurūnaperceive
١٥
(15)
So when they took him [out] and agreed to put him into the bottom of the well... But We inspired to him, "You will surely inform them [someday] about this affair of theirs while they do not perceive [your identity]."

وَجَآءُوٓ
wajāūAnd they came
أَبَاهُمْ
abāhum(to) their father
عِشَآءًۭ
ʿishāanearly at night
يَبْكُونَ
yabkūnaweeping
١٦
(16)
And they came to their father at night, weeping.

قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
يَـٰٓأَبَانَآ
yāabānāO our father
إِنَّا
innāIndeed, we
ذَهَبْنَا
dhahabnā[we] went
نَسْتَبِقُ
nastabiquracing each other
وَتَرَكْنَا
wataraknāand we left
يُوسُفَ
yūsufaYusuf
عِندَ
ʿindawith
مَتَـٰعِنَا
matāʿināour possessions
فَأَكَلَهُ
fa-akalahuand ate him
ٱلذِّئْبُ ۖ
l-dhi'buthe wolf
وَمَآ
wamāBut not
أَنتَ
antayou
بِمُؤْمِنٍۢ
bimu'minin(will) believe
لَّنَا
lanāus
وَلَوْ
walaweven if
كُنَّا
kunnāwe are
صَـٰدِقِينَ
ṣādiqīnatruthful
١٧
(17)
They said, "O our father, indeed we went racing each other and left Joseph with our possessions, and a wolf ate him. But you would not believe us, even if we were truthful."

وَجَآءُو
wajāūAnd they brought
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāupon
قَمِيصِهِۦ
qamīṣihihis shirt
بِدَمٍۢ
bidaminwith false blood
كَذِبٍۢ ۚ
kadhibinwith false blood
قَالَ
qālaHe said
بَلْ
balNay
سَوَّلَتْ
sawwalathas enticed you
لَكُمْ
lakumhas enticed you
أَنفُسُكُمْ
anfusukumyour souls
أَمْرًۭا ۖ
amran(to) a matter
فَصَبْرٌۭ
faṣabrunso patience
جَمِيلٌۭ ۖ
jamīlun(is) beautiful
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahuAnd Allah
ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ
l-mus'taʿānu(is) the One sought for help
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāagainst
مَا
what
تَصِفُونَ
taṣifūnayou describe
١٨
(18)
And they brought upon his shirt false blood. [Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. And Allāh is the one sought for help against that which you describe."

وَجَآءَتْ
wajāatAnd there came
سَيَّارَةٌۭ
sayyāratuna caravan
فَأَرْسَلُوا۟
fa-arsalūand they sent
وَارِدَهُمْ
wāridahumtheir water drawer
فَأَدْلَىٰ
fa-adlāthen he let down
دَلْوَهُۥ ۖ
dalwahuhis bucket
قَالَ
qālaHe said
يَـٰبُشْرَىٰ
yābush'rāO good news
هَـٰذَا
hādhāThis
غُلَـٰمٌۭ ۚ
ghulāmun(is) a boy
وَأَسَرُّوهُ
wa-asarrūhuAnd they hid him
بِضَـٰعَةًۭ ۚ
biḍāʿatan(as) a merchandise
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahuAnd Allah
عَلِيمٌۢ
ʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
بِمَا
bimāof what
يَعْمَلُونَ
yaʿmalūnathey do
١٩
(19)
And there came a company of travelers; then they sent their water drawer, and he let down his bucket. He said, "Good news! Here is a boy." And they concealed him, [taking him] as merchandise; and Allāh was Knowing of what they did.

وَشَرَوْهُ
washarawhuAnd they sold him
بِثَمَنٍۭ
bithamaninfor a price
بَخْسٍۢ
bakhsinvery low
دَرَٰهِمَ
darāhimadirhams
مَعْدُودَةٍۢ
maʿdūdatinfew
وَكَانُوا۟
wakānūand they were
فِيهِ
fīhiabout him
مِنَ
minaof
ٱلزَّٰهِدِينَ
l-zāhidīnathose keen to give up
٢٠
(20)
And they sold him for a reduced price - a few dirhams - and they were, concerning him, of those content with little.

وَقَالَ
waqālaAnd said
ٱلَّذِى
alladhīthe one who
ٱشْتَرَىٰهُ
ish'tarāhubought him
مِن
minof
مِّصْرَ
miṣ'raEgypt
لِٱمْرَأَتِهِۦٓ
li-im'ra-atihito his wife
أَكْرِمِى
akrimīMake comfortable
مَثْوَىٰهُ
mathwāhuhis stay
عَسَىٰٓ
ʿasāPerhaps
أَن
anthat
يَنفَعَنَآ
yanfaʿanā(he) will benefit us
أَوْ
awor
نَتَّخِذَهُۥ
nattakhidhahuwe will take him
وَلَدًۭا ۚ
waladan(as) a son
وَكَذَٰلِكَ
wakadhālikaAnd thus
مَكَّنَّا
makkannāWe established
لِيُوسُفَ
liyūsufaYusuf
فِى
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
l-arḍithe land
وَلِنُعَلِّمَهُۥ
walinuʿallimahuthat We might teach him
مِن
min(the) interpretation of
تَأْوِيلِ
tawīli(the) interpretation of
ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ
l-aḥādīthithe events
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahuAnd Allah
غَالِبٌ
ghālibun(is) Predominant
عَلَىٰٓ
ʿalāover
أَمْرِهِۦ
amrihiHis affairs
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
walākinnabut
أَكْثَرَ
aktharamost
ٱلنَّاسِ
l-nāsi(of) the people
لَا
(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَ
yaʿlamūnaknow
٢١
(21)
And the one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, "Make his residence comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son." And thus, We established Joseph in the land that We might teach him the interpretation of events [i.e., dreams]. And Allāh is predominant over His affair, but most of the people do not know.

وَلَمَّا
walammāAnd when
بَلَغَ
balaghahe reached
أَشُدَّهُۥٓ
ashuddahuhis maturity
ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ
ātaynāhuWe gave him
حُكْمًۭا
ḥuk'manwisdom
وَعِلْمًۭا ۚ
waʿil'manand knowledge
وَكَذَٰلِكَ
wakadhālikaAnd thus
نَجْزِى
najzīWe reward
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
l-muḥ'sinīnathe good-doers
٢٢
(22)
And when he [i.e., Joseph] reached maturity, We gave him judgement and knowledge. And thus We reward the doers of good.

وَرَٰوَدَتْهُ
warāwadathuAnd sought to seduce him
ٱلَّتِى
allatīshe who
هُوَ
huwahe (was)
فِى
in
بَيْتِهَا
baytihāher house
عَن
ʿanfrom
نَّفْسِهِۦ
nafsihihis self
وَغَلَّقَتِ
waghallaqatiAnd she closed
ٱلْأَبْوَٰبَ
l-abwābathe doors
وَقَالَتْ
waqālatand she said
هَيْتَ
haytaCome on
لَكَ ۚ
lakayou
قَالَ
qālaHe said
مَعَاذَ
maʿādhaI seek refuge in Allah
ٱللَّهِ ۖ
l-lahiI seek refuge in Allah
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed, he
رَبِّىٓ
rabbī(is) my lord
أَحْسَنَ
aḥsana(who has) made good
مَثْوَاىَ ۖ
mathwāyamy stay
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed
لَا
not
يُفْلِحُ
yuf'liḥuwill succeed
ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ
l-ẓālimūnathe wrongdoers
٢٣
(23)
And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, "Come, you." He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh. Indeed, he is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed."

وَلَقَدْ
walaqadAnd certainly
هَمَّتْ
hammatshe did desire
بِهِۦ ۖ
bihihim
وَهَمَّ
wahammaand he would have desired
بِهَا
bihāher
لَوْلَآ
lawlāif not
أَن
anthat
رَّءَا
raāhe saw
بُرْهَـٰنَ
bur'hānathe proof
رَبِّهِۦ ۚ
rabbihi(of) his Lord
كَذَٰلِكَ
kadhālikaThus
لِنَصْرِفَ
linaṣrifathat We might avert
عَنْهُ
ʿanhufrom him
ٱلسُّوٓءَ
l-sūathe evil
وَٱلْفَحْشَآءَ ۚ
wal-faḥshāaand the immorality
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed, he
مِنْ
min(was) of
عِبَادِنَا
ʿibādināOur slaves
ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
l-mukh'laṣīnathe sincere
٢٤
(24)
And she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof [i.e., sign] of his Lord. And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants.

وَٱسْتَبَقَا
wa-is'tabaqāAnd they both raced
ٱلْبَابَ
l-bāba(to) the door
وَقَدَّتْ
waqaddatand she tore
قَمِيصَهُۥ
qamīṣahuhis shirt
مِن
minfrom
دُبُرٍۢ
duburinthe back
وَأَلْفَيَا
wa-alfayāand they both found
سَيِّدَهَا
sayyidahāher husband
لَدَا
ladāat
ٱلْبَابِ ۚ
l-bābithe door
قَالَتْ
qālatShe said
مَا
What
جَزَآءُ
jazāu(is) the recompense
مَنْ
man(of one) who
أَرَادَ
arādaintended
بِأَهْلِكَ
bi-ahlikafor your wife
سُوٓءًا
sūanevil
إِلَّآ
illāexcept
أَن
anthat
يُسْجَنَ
yus'janahe be imprisoned
أَوْ
awor
عَذَابٌ
ʿadhābuna punishment
أَلِيمٌۭ
alīmunpainful
٢٥
(25)
And they both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door. She said, "What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?"

هِىَ
hiyaShe
رَٰوَدَتْنِى
rāwadatnīsought to seduce me
عَن
ʿanabout
نَّفْسِى ۚ
nafsīmyself
وَشَهِدَ
washahidaAnd testified
شَاهِدٌۭ
shāhiduna witness
مِّنْ
minof
أَهْلِهَآ
ahlihāher family
إِن
inIf
كَانَ
kāna[is]
قَمِيصُهُۥ
qamīṣuhuhis shirt
قُدَّ
qudda(is) torn
مِن
minfrom
قُبُلٍۢ
qubulinthe front
فَصَدَقَتْ
faṣadaqatthen she has spoken the truth
وَهُوَ
wahuwaand he
مِنَ
mina(is) of
ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ
l-kādhibīnathe liars
٢٦
(26)
[Joseph] said, "It was she who sought to seduce me." And a witness from her family testified, "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars.

وَإِن
wa-inBut if

قَمِيصُهُۥ
qamīṣuhuhis shirt
قُدَّ
qudda(is) torn
مِن
minfrom
دُبُرٍۢ
duburin(the) back
فَكَذَبَتْ
fakadhabatthen she has lied
وَهُوَ
wahuwaand he
مِنَ
mina(is) of
ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
l-ṣādiqīnathe truthful
٢٧
(27)
But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful."

فَلَمَّا
falammāSo when
رَءَا
raāhe saw
قَمِيصَهُۥ
qamīṣahuhis shirt
قُدَّ
quddatorn
مِن
minfrom
دُبُرٍۢ
duburin(the) back
قَالَ
qālahe said
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed, it
مِن
min(is) of
كَيْدِكُنَّ ۖ
kaydikunnayour plot
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
كَيْدَكُنَّ
kaydakunnayour plot
عَظِيمٌۭ

So when he [i.e., her husband] saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of your [i.e., women's] plan. Indeed, your plan is great [i.e., vehement].

ٱلْخَاطِـِٔينَ
l-khāṭiīnathe sinful

(29)
Joseph, ignore this. And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful."

نِسْوَةٌۭ
nis'watunwomen
فِى

ٱلْمَدِينَةِ
l-madīnatithe city
ٱمْرَأَتُ
im'ra-atuThe wife of
ٱلْعَزِيزِ
l-ʿazīziAziz
تُرَٰوِدُ
turāwidu(is) seeking to seduce
فَتَىٰهَا
fatāhāher slave boy
عَن
ʿanabout
نَّفْسِهِۦ ۖ
nafsihihimself
قَدْ
qadindeed
شَغَفَهَا
shaghafahāhe has impassioned her
حُبًّا ۖ
ḥubban(with) love
إِنَّا
innāIndeed, we
لَنَرَىٰهَا
lanarāhā[we] surely see her
فِى
in
ضَلَـٰلٍۢ
ḍalālinan error
مُّبِينٍۢ
mubīninclear
٣٠
(30)
And women in the city said, "The wife of al-ʿAzeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we see her [to be] in clear error."

فَلَمَّا
falammāSo when
سَمِعَتْ
samiʿatshe heard
بِمَكْرِهِنَّ
bimakrihinnaof their scheming
أَرْسَلَتْ
arsalatshe sent
إِلَيْهِنَّ
ilayhinnafor them
وَأَعْتَدَتْ
wa-aʿtadatand she prepared
لَهُنَّ
lahunnafor them
مُتَّكَـًۭٔا
muttaka-ana banquet
وَءَاتَتْ
waātatand she gave
كُلَّ
kullaeach
وَٰحِدَةٍۢ
wāḥidatinone
مِّنْهُنَّ
min'hunnaof them
سِكِّينًۭا
sikkīnana knife
وَقَالَتِ
waqālatiand she said
ٱخْرُجْ
ukh'rujCome out
عَلَيْهِنَّ ۖ
ʿalayhinnabefore them
فَلَمَّا
falammāThen when
رَأَيْنَهُۥٓ
ra-aynahuthey saw him
أَكْبَرْنَهُۥ
akbarnahuthey greatly admired him
وَقَطَّعْنَ
waqaṭṭaʿnaand cut
أَيْدِيَهُنَّ
aydiyahunnatheir hands
وَقُلْنَ
waqul'nathey said
حَـٰشَ
ḥāshaForbid
لِلَّهِ
lillahiAllah
مَا
not
هَـٰذَا
hādhā(is) this
بَشَرًا
basharana man
إِنْ
innot
هَـٰذَآ
hādhā(is) this
إِلَّا
illābut
مَلَكٌۭ
malakunan angel
كَرِيمٌۭ
karīmunnoble
٣١
(31)
So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands and said, "Perfect is Allāh! This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel."

فَذَٰلِكُنَّ
fadhālikunnaThat
ٱلَّذِى
alladhī(is) the one
لُمْتُنَّنِى
lum'tunnanīyou blamed me
فِيهِ ۖ
fīhiabout him
وَلَقَدْ
walaqadAnd certainly
رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ
rāwadttuhuI sought to seduce him
عَن
ʿan[from]
نَّفْسِهِۦ
nafsihi[himself]
فَٱسْتَعْصَمَ ۖ
fa-is'taʿṣamabut he saved himself
وَلَئِن
wala-inand if
لَّمْ
lamnot
يَفْعَلْ
yafʿalhe does
مَآ
what
ءَامُرُهُۥ
āmuruhuI order him
لَيُسْجَنَنَّ
layus'janannasurely, he will be imprisoned
وَلَيَكُونًۭا
walayakūnanand certainly will be
مِّنَ
minaof
ٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَ
l-ṣāghirīnathose who are disgraced
٣٢
(32)
She said, "That is the one about whom you blamed me. And I certainly sought to seduce him, but he firmly refused; and if he will not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be of those debased."

رَبِّ
rabbiMy Lord
ٱلسِّجْنُ
l-sij'nuthe prison
أَحَبُّ
aḥabbu(is) dearer
إِلَىَّ
ilayyato me
مِمَّا
mimmāthan what
يَدْعُونَنِىٓ
yadʿūnanīthey invite me
إِلَيْهِ ۖ
ilayhito it
وَإِلَّا
wa-illāAnd unless
تَصْرِفْ
taṣrifYou turn away
عَنِّى
ʿannīfrom me
كَيْدَهُنَّ
kaydahunnatheir plot
أَصْبُ
aṣbuI might incline
إِلَيْهِنَّ
ilayhinnatowards them
وَأَكُن
wa-akunand [I] be
مِّنَ
minaof
ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ
l-jāhilīnathe ignorant
٣٣
(33)
He said, "My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant."

fa-is'tajābaSo responded
لَهُۥ

رَبُّهُۥ

فَصَرَفَ
faṣarafaand turned away
عَنْهُ
ʿanhufrom him
كَيْدَهُنَّ ۚ
kaydahunnatheir plot
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed, [He]
هُوَ
huwaHe
ٱلسَّمِيعُ
l-samīʿu(is) All-Hearer
ٱلْعَلِيمُ
l-ʿalīmuAll-Knower
٣٤
(34)
So his Lord responded to him and averted from him their plan. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

لَيَسْجُنُنَّهُۥ
layasjununnahusurely they should imprison him
حَتَّىٰ
ḥattāuntil
حِينٍۢ
ḥīnina time
٣٥
(35)
Then it appeared to them after they had seen the signs that he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] should surely imprison him for a time.

wadakhalaAnd entered
مَعَهُ
maʿahuwith him
ٱلسِّجْنَ
l-sij'na(in) the prison
فَتَيَانِ ۖ
fatayānitwo young men
قَالَ
qālaSaid
أَحَدُهُمَآ
aḥaduhumāone of them
إِنِّىٓ
innīIndeed, I
أَرَىٰنِىٓ
arānī[I] see myself
أَعْصِرُ
aʿṣirupressing
خَمْرًۭا ۖ
khamranwine
وَقَالَ
waqālaAnd said
ٱلْـَٔاخَرُ
l-ākharuthe other
إِنِّىٓ
innīIndeed, I
أَرَىٰنِىٓ
arānī[I] see myself
أَحْمِلُ
aḥmilu[I am] carrying
فَوْقَ
fawqaover
رَأْسِى
rasīmy head
خُبْزًۭا
khub'zanbread
تَأْكُلُ
takulu(were) eating
ٱلطَّيْرُ
l-ṭayruthe birds
مِنْهُ ۖ
min'hufrom it
نَبِّئْنَا
nabbi'nāInform us
بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦٓ ۖ
bitawīlihiof its interpretation
إِنَّا
innāindeed, we
نَرَىٰكَ
narāka[we] see you
مِنَ
minaof
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
l-muḥ'sinīnathe good-doers
٣٦
(36)
And there entered the prison with him two young men. One of them said, "Indeed, I have seen myself [in a dream] pressing [grapes for] wine." The other said, "Indeed, I have seen myself carrying upon my head [some] bread, from which the birds were eating. Inform us of its interpretation; indeed, we see you to be of those who do good."

Not
يَأْتِيكُمَا
yatīkumā(will) come to both of you
طَعَامٌۭ
ṭaʿāmunfood
تُرْزَقَانِهِۦٓ
tur'zaqānihiyou are provided with
إِلَّا
illābut
نَبَّأْتُكُمَا
nabbatukumāI will inform both of you
بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ
bitawīlihiof its interpretation
قَبْلَ
qablabefore
أَن
an[that]
يَأْتِيَكُمَا ۚ
yatiyakumā[it] comes to both of you
ذَٰلِكُمَا
dhālikumāThat
مِمَّا
mimmā(is) of what
عَلَّمَنِى
ʿallamanīhas taught me
رَبِّىٓ ۚ
rabbīmy Lord
إِنِّى
innīIndeed, I
تَرَكْتُ
taraktu[I] abandon
مِلَّةَ
millata(the) religion
قَوْمٍۢ
qawmin(of) a people
لَّا
not
يُؤْمِنُونَ
yu'minūnathey believe
بِٱللَّهِ
bil-lahiin Allah
وَهُم
wahumand they
بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ
bil-ākhiratiin the Hereafter
هُمْ
hum[they]
كَـٰفِرُونَ
kāfirūna(are) disbelievers
٣٧
(37)
He said, "You will not receive food that is provided to you except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have left the religion of a people who do not believe in Allāh, and they, in the Hereafter, are disbelievers.

وَٱتَّبَعْتُ
wa-ittabaʿtuAnd I follow
مِلَّةَ
millata(the) religion
ءَابَآءِىٓ
ābāī(of) my forefathers
إِبْرَٰهِيمَ
ib'rāhīmaIbrahim
وَإِسْحَـٰقَ
wa-is'ḥāqaand Isaac
وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ
wayaʿqūbaand Yaqub
مَا
Not
كَانَ
kānawas
لَنَآ
lanāfor us
أَن
anthat
نُّشْرِكَ
nush'rikawe associate
بِٱللَّهِ
bil-lahiwith Allah
مِن
minany
شَىْءٍۢ ۚ
shayinthing
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālikaThat
مِن
min(is) from
فَضْلِ
faḍli(the) Grace
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi(of) Allah
عَلَيْنَا
ʿalaynāupon us
وَعَلَى
waʿalāand upon
ٱلنَّاسِ
l-nāsithe mankind
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
walākinnabut
أَكْثَرَ
aktharamost
ٱلنَّاسِ
l-nāsi(of) the men
لَا
(are) not
يَشْكُرُونَ
yashkurūnagrateful
٣٨
(38)
And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allāh. That is from the favor of Allāh upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.

يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ
yāṣāḥibayiO my two companions
ٱلسِّجْنِ
l-sij'ni(of) the prison
ءَأَرْبَابٌۭ
a-arbābunAre lords
مُّتَفَرِّقُونَ
mutafarriqūnaseparate
خَيْرٌ
khayrunbetter
أَمِ
amior
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahuAllah
ٱلْوَٰحِدُ
l-wāḥiduthe One
ٱلْقَهَّارُ
l-qahāruthe Irresistible
٣٩
(39)
O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allāh, the One, the Prevailing?

دُونِهِۦٓ

إِلَّآ
illābut
أَسْمَآءًۭ

sammaytumūhāwhich you have named them
أَنتُمْ
antumyou
وَءَابَآؤُكُم
waābāukumand your forefathers
مَّآ
not
أَنزَلَ
anzala(has) sent down
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahuAllah
بِهَا
bihāfor it
مِن
minany
سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ
sul'ṭāninauthority
إِنِ
iniNot
ٱلْحُكْمُ
l-ḥuk'mu(is) the command
إِلَّا
illābut
لِلَّهِ ۚ
lillahifor Allah
أَمَرَ
amaraHe has commanded
أَلَّا
allāthat not
تَعْبُدُوٓا۟
taʿbudūyou worship
إِلَّآ
illābut
إِيَّاهُ ۚ
iyyāhuHim Alone
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālikaThat
ٱلدِّينُ
l-dīnu(is) the religion
ٱلْقَيِّمُ
l-qayimuthe right
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
walākinnabut
أَكْثَرَ
aktharamost
ٱلنَّاسِ
l-nāsi[the] men
لَا
(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَ
yaʿlamūnaknow
٤٠
(40)
You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allāh has sent down no evidence. Legislation is not but for Allāh. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ
yāṣāḥibayiO my two companions
ٱلسِّجْنِ
l-sij'ni(of) the prison
أَمَّآ
ammāAs for
أَحَدُكُمَا
aḥadukumāone of you
فَيَسْقِى
fayasqīhe will give drink
رَبَّهُۥ
rabbahu(to) his master
خَمْرًۭا ۖ
khamranwine
وَأَمَّا
wa-ammāand as for
ٱلْـَٔاخَرُ
l-ākharuthe other
فَيُصْلَبُ
fayuṣ'labuhe will be crucified
فَتَأْكُلُ
fatakuluand will eat
ٱلطَّيْرُ
l-ṭayruthe birds
مِن
minfrom
رَّأْسِهِۦ ۚ
rasihihis head
قُضِىَ
quḍiyaHas been decreed
ٱلْأَمْرُ
l-amruthe matter
ٱلَّذِى
alladhīabout which
فِيهِ
fīhiabout which
تَسْتَفْتِيَانِ
tastaftiyāniyou both inquire
٤١
(41)
O two companions of prison, as for one of you, he will give drink to his master of wine; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed about which you both inquire."

waqālaAnd he said
لِلَّذِى
lilladhīto the one whom
ظَنَّ
ẓannahe thought
أَنَّهُۥ
annahuthat he
نَاجٍۢ
nājin(would be) saved
مِّنْهُمَا
min'humāof both of them
ٱذْكُرْنِى
udh'kur'nīMention me
عِندَ
ʿindato
رَبِّكَ
rabbikayour master
فَأَنسَىٰهُ
fa-ansāhuBut made him forget
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ
l-shayṭānuthe Shaitaan
ذِكْرَ
dhik'ra(the) mention
رَبِّهِۦ
rabbihi(to) his master
فَلَبِثَ
falabithaso he remained
فِى
in
ٱلسِّجْنِ
l-sij'nithe prison
بِضْعَ
biḍ'ʿaseveral
سِنِينَ
sinīnayears
٤٢
(42)
And he said to the one whom he knew would go free, "Mention me before your master." But Satan made him forget the mention [to] his master, and he [i.e., Joseph] remained in prison several years.

إِنِّىٓ
innīIndeed, I
أَرَىٰ
arā[I] have seen
سَبْعَ
sabʿaseven
بَقَرَٰتٍۢ
baqarātincows
سِمَانٍۢ
simāninfat
يَأْكُلُهُنَّ
yakuluhunnaeating them
سَبْعٌ
sabʿunseven
عِجَافٌۭ
ʿijāfunlean ones
وَسَبْعَ
wasabʿaand seven
سُنۢبُلَـٰتٍ
sunbulātinears (of corn)
خُضْرٍۢ
khuḍ'ringreen
وَأُخَرَ
wa-ukharaand others
يَابِسَـٰتٍۢ ۖ
yābisātindry
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
yāayyuhāO
ٱلْمَلَأُ
l-mala-uchiefs
أَفْتُونِى
aftūnīExplain to me
فِى
about
رُءْيَـٰىَ
ru'yāyamy vision
إِن
inif
كُنتُمْ
kuntumyou can
لِلرُّءْيَا
lilrru'yāof visions
تَعْبُرُونَ
taʿburūnainterpret
٤٣
(43)
And [subsequently] the king said, "Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions."

قَالُوٓا۟
qālūThey said
أَضْغَـٰثُ
aḍghāthuConfused
أَحْلَـٰمٍۢ ۖ
aḥlāmindreams
وَمَا
wamāand not
نَحْنُ
naḥnuwe
بِتَأْوِيلِ
bitawīli(are) in the interpretation
ٱلْأَحْلَـٰمِ
l-aḥlāmi(of) the dreams
بِعَـٰلِمِينَ
biʿālimīnalearned
٤٤
(44)
They said, "[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams."

وَقَالَ
waqālaBut said
ٱلَّذِى
alladhīthe one who
نَجَا
najāwas saved
مِنْهُمَا
min'humāof the two
وَٱدَّكَرَ
wa-iddakaraand remembered
بَعْدَ
baʿdaafter
أُمَّةٍ
ummatina period
أَنَا۠
anāI
أُنَبِّئُكُم
unabbi-ukum[I] will inform you
بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ
bitawīlihiof its interpretation
فَأَرْسِلُونِ
fa-arsilūniso send me forth
٤٥
(45)
But the one who was freed and remembered after a time said, "I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth."

يَأْكُلُهُنَّ
yakuluhunnaeating them
سَبْعٌ
sabʿunseven
عِجَافٌۭ
ʿijāfunlean ones
وَسَبْعِ
wasabʿiand seven
سُنۢبُلَـٰتٍ
sunbulātinears (of corn)
خُضْرٍۢ
khuḍ'ringreen
وَأُخَرَ
wa-ukharaand other
يَابِسَـٰتٍۢ

لَّعَلِّىٓ
laʿallīthat I may
أَرْجِعُ
arjiʿureturn
إِلَى
ilāto
ٱلنَّاسِ
l-nāsithe people
لَعَلَّهُمْ
laʿallahumso that they may
يَعْلَمُونَ
yaʿlamūnaknow
٤٦
(46)
[He said], "Joseph, O man of truth, explain to us about seven fat cows eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry - that I may return to the people [i.e., the king and his court]; perhaps they will know [about you]."

سَبْعَ
sabʿa(for) seven
سِنِينَ

دَأَبًۭا
da-abanas usual
فَمَا
famāand that which
حَصَدتُّمْ
ḥaṣadttumyou reap
فَذَرُوهُ
fadharūhuso leave it
فِى
in
سُنۢبُلِهِۦٓ
sunbulihiits ears
إِلَّا
illāexcept
قَلِيلًۭا
qalīlana little
مِّمَّا
mimmāfrom which
تَأْكُلُونَ
takulūnayou (will) eat
٤٧
(47)
[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat.

يَأْكُلْنَ

قَدَّمْتُمْ
qaddamtumyou advanced
لَهُنَّ
lahunnafor them
إِلَّا
illāexcept
قَلِيلًۭا
qalīlana little
مِّمَّا
mimmāof what
تُحْصِنُونَ
tuḥ'ṣinūnayou (will) store
٤٨
(48)
Then will come after that seven difficult [years] which will consume what you advanced [i.e., saved] for them, except a little from which you will store.

ذَٰلِكَ

عَامٌۭ
ʿāmuna year
فِيهِ

يُغَاثُ
yughāthuwill be given abundant rain
ٱلنَّاسُ
l-nāsuthe people
وَفِيهِ
wafīhiand in it
يَعْصِرُونَ
yaʿṣirūnathey will press
٤٩
(49)
Then will come after that a year in which the people will be given rain and in which they will press [olives and grapes]."

waqālaAnd said
ٱلْمَلِكُ
l-malikuthe king
ٱئْتُونِى
i'tūnīBring him to me
بِهِۦ ۖ
bihiBring him to me
فَلَمَّا
falammāBut when

jāahucame to him
ٱلرَّسُولُ
l-rasūluthe messenger
قَالَ
qālahe said
ٱرْجِعْ
ir'jiʿReturn
إِلَىٰ
ilāto
رَبِّكَ
rabbikayour lord
فَسْـَٔلْهُ
fasalhuand ask him
مَا
what
بَالُ
bālu(is the) case
ٱلنِّسْوَةِ
l-nis'wati(of) the women
ٱلَّـٰتِى
allātīwho
قَطَّعْنَ
qaṭṭaʿnacut
أَيْدِيَهُنَّ ۚ
aydiyahunnatheir hands
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
رَبِّى
rabbīmy Lord
بِكَيْدِهِنَّ
bikaydihinnaof their plot
عَلِيمٌۭ
ʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
٥٠
(50)
And the king said, "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Joseph] said, "Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord is Knowing of their plan."

خَطْبُكُنَّ

رَٰوَدتُّنَّ

ʿanfrom
نَّفْسِهِۦ ۚ

حَـٰشَ
ḥāshaAllah forbid
لِلَّهِ
lillahiAllah forbid
مَا
Not
عَلِمْنَا
ʿalim'nāwe know
عَلَيْهِ
ʿalayhiabout him
مِن
minany
سُوٓءٍۢ ۚ
sūinevil
قَالَتِ
qālatiSaid
ٱمْرَأَتُ
im'ra-atu(the) wife
ٱلْعَزِيزِ
l-ʿazīzi(of) Aziz
ٱلْـَٔـٰنَ
l-ānaNow
حَصْحَصَ
ḥaṣḥaṣa(is) manifest
ٱلْحَقُّ
l-ḥaquthe truth
أَنَا۠
anāI
رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ
rāwadttuhusought to seduce him
عَن
ʿanfrom
نَّفْسِهِۦ
nafsihihimself
وَإِنَّهُۥ
wa-innahuand indeed, he
لَمِنَ
lamina(is) surely of
ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
l-ṣādiqīnathe truthful
٥١
(51)
Said [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allāh! We know about him no evil." The wife of al-ʿAzeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful.

ذَٰلِكَ
dhālikaThat
لِيَعْلَمَ
liyaʿlamahe may know
أَنِّى
annīthat I
لَمْ
lamnot
أَخُنْهُ
akhun'hu[I] betray him
بِٱلْغَيْبِ
bil-ghaybiin secret
وَأَنَّ
wa-annaand that
ٱللَّهَ
l-lahaAllah
لَا
(does) not
يَهْدِى
yahdīguide
كَيْدَ
kayda(the) plan
ٱلْخَآئِنِينَ
l-khāinīna(of) the betrayers
٥٢
(52)
That is so he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] will know that I did not betray him in [his] absence and that Allāh does not guide the plan of betrayers.

wamāAnd not
أُبَرِّئُ
ubarri-uI absolve
نَفْسِىٓ ۚ
nafsīmyself
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
ٱلنَّفْسَ
l-nafsathe soul
لَأَمَّارَةٌۢ
la-ammāratun(is) a certain enjoiner
بِٱلسُّوٓءِ
bil-sūiof evil
إِلَّا
illāunless
مَا
[that]
رَحِمَ
raḥimabestows Mercy
رَبِّىٓ ۚ
rabbīmy Lord
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
رَبِّى
rabbīmy Lord
غَفُورٌۭ
ghafūrun(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٌۭ
raḥīmunMost Merciful
٥٣
(53)
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."

وَقَالَ
waqālaAnd said
ٱلْمَلِكُ
l-malikuthe king
ٱئْتُونِى
i'tūnīBring him to me
بِهِۦٓ
bihiBring him to me
أَسْتَخْلِصْهُ
astakhliṣ'huI will select him
لِنَفْسِى ۖ
linafsīfor myself
فَلَمَّا
falammāThen when
كَلَّمَهُۥ
kallamahuhe spoke to him
قَالَ
qālahe said
إِنَّكَ
innakaIndeed, you
ٱلْيَوْمَ
l-yawma(are) today
لَدَيْنَا
ladaynāwith us
مَكِينٌ
makīnunfirmly established
أَمِينٌۭ
amīnun(and) trusted
٥٤
(54)
And the king said, "Bring him to me; I will appoint him exclusively for myself." And when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted."

ٱجْعَلْنِى
ij'ʿalnīAppoint me
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāover
خَزَآئِنِ
khazāini(the) treasuries
ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ
l-arḍi(of) the land
إِنِّى
innīIndeed, I
حَفِيظٌ
ḥafīẓun(will be) a guardian
عَلِيمٌۭ
ʿalīmunknowing
٥٥
(55)
[Joseph] said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian."

وَكَذَٰلِكَ
wakadhālikaAnd thus
مَكَّنَّا
makkannāWe established
لِيُوسُفَ
liyūsufa[to] Yusuf
فِى
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
l-arḍithe land
يَتَبَوَّأُ
yatabawwa-uto settle
مِنْهَا
min'hātherein
حَيْثُ
ḥaythuwhere ever
يَشَآءُ ۚ
yashāuhe willed
نُصِيبُ
nuṣībuWe bestow
بِرَحْمَتِنَا
biraḥmatināOur Mercy
مَن
man(on) whom
نَّشَآءُ ۖ
nashāuWe will
وَلَا
walāAnd not
نُضِيعُ
nuḍīʿuWe let go waste
أَجْرَ
ajra(the) reward
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
l-muḥ'sinīna(of) the good-doers
٥٦
(56)
And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.

وَلَأَجْرُ
wala-ajruAnd surely (the) reward
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ
l-ākhirati(of) the Hereafter
خَيْرٌۭ
khayrun(is) better
لِّلَّذِينَ
lilladhīnafor those who
ءَامَنُوا۟
āmanūbelieve
وَكَانُوا۟
wakānūand are
يَتَّقُونَ
yattaqūnaGod conscious
٥٧
(57)
And the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believed and were fearing Allāh.

wajāaAnd came
إِخْوَةُ
ikh'watu(the) brothers
يُوسُفَ
yūsufa(of) Yusuf
فَدَخَلُوا۟
fadakhalūand they entered
عَلَيْهِ
ʿalayhiupon him
فَعَرَفَهُمْ
faʿarafahumand he recognized them
وَهُمْ
wahumbut they
لَهُۥ
lahuknew him not
مُنكِرُونَ
munkirūnaknew him not
٥٨
(58)
And the brothers of Joseph came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown.

وَلَمَّا
walammāAnd when
جَهَّزَهُم
jahhazahumhe had furnished them
بِجَهَازِهِمْ
bijahāzihimwith their supplies
قَالَ
qālahe said
ٱئْتُونِى
i'tūnīBring to me
بِأَخٍۢ
bi-akhina brother
لَّكُم
lakumof yours
مِّنْ
minfrom
أَبِيكُمْ ۚ
abīkumyour father
أَلَا
alāDo not
تَرَوْنَ
tarawnayou see
أَنِّىٓ
annīthat I
أُوفِى
ūfī[I] give full
ٱلْكَيْلَ
l-kayla[the] measure
وَأَنَا۠
wa-anāand that I am
خَيْرُ
khayru(the) best
ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ
l-munzilīna(of) the hosts
٥٩
(59)
And when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators?

فَإِن

لَّمْ

تَأْتُونِى
tatūnīyou bring him to me
بِهِۦ
bihiyou bring him to me
فَلَا
falāthen (there will be) no
كَيْلَ
kaylameasure
لَكُمْ
lakumfor you
عِندِى
ʿindīfrom me
وَلَا
walāand not
تَقْرَبُونِ
taqrabūniyou will come near me
٦٠
(60)
But if you do not bring him to me, no measure will there be [hereafter] for you from me, nor will you approach me."

قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
سَنُرَٰوِدُ
sanurāwiduWe will try to get permission
عَنْهُ
ʿanhufor him
أَبَاهُ
abāhu(from) his father
وَإِنَّا
wa-innāand indeed we
لَفَـٰعِلُونَ
lafāʿilūnasurely will do
٦١
(61)
They said, "We will attempt to dissuade his father from [keeping] him, and indeed, we will do [it]."

waqālaAnd he said
لِفِتْيَـٰنِهِ
lifit'yānihito his servants
ٱجْعَلُوا۟
ij'ʿalūPut
بِضَـٰعَتَهُمْ
biḍāʿatahumtheir merchandise
فِى
in
رِحَالِهِمْ
riḥālihimtheir saddlebags
لَعَلَّهُمْ
laʿallahumso that they
يَعْرِفُونَهَآ
yaʿrifūnahāmay recognize it
إِذَا
idhāwhen
ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟
inqalabūthey go back
إِلَىٰٓ
ilāto
أَهْلِهِمْ
ahlihimtheir people
لَعَلَّهُمْ
laʿallahumso that they may
يَرْجِعُونَ
yarjiʿūnareturn
٦٢
(62)
And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return."

فَلَمَّا
falammāSo when
رَجَعُوٓا۟
rajaʿūthey returned
إِلَىٰٓ
ilāto
أَبِيهِمْ
abīhimtheir father
قَالُوا۟
qālūthey said
يَـٰٓأَبَانَا
yāabānāO our father
مُنِعَ
muniʿaHas been denied
مِنَّا
minnāto us
ٱلْكَيْلُ
l-kayluthe measure
فَأَرْسِلْ
fa-arsilso send
مَعَنَآ
maʿanāwith us
أَخَانَا
akhānāour brother
نَكْتَلْ
naktal(that) we will get measure
وَإِنَّا
wa-innāAnd indeed, we
لَهُۥ
lahufor him
لَحَـٰفِظُونَ
laḥāfiẓūna(will) surely (be) guardians
٦٣
(63)
So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians."

عَلَيْهِ

إِلَّا

كَمَآ

عَلَىٰٓ
ʿalāwith
أَخِيهِ
akhīhihis brother
مِن
minbefore
قَبْلُ ۖ
qablubefore
فَٱللَّهُ
fal-lahuBut Allah
خَيْرٌ
khayrun(is) the best
حَـٰفِظًۭا ۖ
ḥāfiẓanGuardian
وَهُوَ
wahuwaand He
أَرْحَمُ
arḥamu(is the) Most Merciful
ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
l-rāḥimīna(of) the merciful
٦٤
(64)
He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allāh is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful."

وَلَمَّا
walammāAnd when
فَتَحُوا۟
fataḥūthey opened
مَتَـٰعَهُمْ
matāʿahumtheir baggage
وَجَدُوا۟
wajadūthey found
بِضَـٰعَتَهُمْ
biḍāʿatahumtheir merchandise
رُدَّتْ
ruddatreturned
إِلَيْهِمْ ۖ
ilayhimto them
قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
يَـٰٓأَبَانَا
yāabānāO our father
مَا
What
نَبْغِى ۖ
nabghī(could) we desire
هَـٰذِهِۦ
hādhihiThis
بِضَـٰعَتُنَا
biḍāʿatunā(is) our merchandise
رُدَّتْ
ruddatreturned
إِلَيْنَا ۖ
ilaynāto us
وَنَمِيرُ
wanamīruAnd we will get provision
أَهْلَنَا
ahlanā(for) our family
وَنَحْفَظُ
wanaḥfaẓuand we will protect
أَخَانَا
akhānāour brother
وَنَزْدَادُ
wanazdāduand get an increase
كَيْلَ
kaylameasure
بَعِيرٍۢ ۖ
baʿīrin(of) a camel's (load)
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālikaThat
كَيْلٌۭ
kaylun(is) a measurement
يَسِيرٌۭ
yasīruneasy
٦٥
(65)
And when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies [i.e., food] for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement."

مِّنَ

ٱللَّهِ
l-lahiAllah
لَتَأْتُنَّنِى
latatunnanīthat surely you will bring him to me
بِهِۦٓ
bihithat surely you will bring him to me
إِلَّآ
illāunless
أَن
anthat
يُحَاطَ
yuḥāṭayou are surrounded
بِكُمْ ۖ
bikumyou are surrounded
فَلَمَّآ
falammāAnd when
ءَاتَوْهُ
ātawhuthey had given him
مَوْثِقَهُمْ
mawthiqahumtheir promise
قَالَ
qālahe said
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahuAllah
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāover
مَا
what
نَقُولُ
naqūluwe say
وَكِيلٌۭ
wakīlun(is) a Guardian
٦٦
(66)
[Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise [i.e., oath] by Allāh that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded [i.e., overcome by enemies]." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allāh, over what we say, is Entrusted."

يَـٰبَنِىَّ
yābaniyyaO my sons
لَا
(Do) not
تَدْخُلُوا۟
tadkhulūenter
مِنۢ

بَابٍۢ
bābinone gate
وَٰحِدٍۢ
wāḥidinone gate
وَٱدْخُلُوا۟
wa-ud'khulūbut enter
مِنْ
minfrom
أَبْوَٰبٍۢ
abwābingates
مُّتَفَرِّقَةٍۢ ۖ
mutafarriqatindifferent
وَمَآ
wamāAnd not
أُغْنِى
ugh'nīI can avail
عَنكُم
ʿankumyou
مِّنَ
minaagainst
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahiAllah
مِن
minany
شَىْءٍ ۖ
shayinthing
إِنِ
iniNot
ٱلْحُكْمُ
l-ḥuk'mu(is) the decision
إِلَّا
illāexcept
لِلَّهِ ۖ
lillahiwith Allah
عَلَيْهِ
ʿalayhiupon Him
تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ
tawakkaltuI put my trust
وَعَلَيْهِ
waʿalayhiand upon Him
فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ
falyatawakkalilet put (their) trust
ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ
l-mutawakilūnathe ones who put trust
٦٧
(67)
And he said, "O my sons, do not enter from one gate but enter from different gates; and I cannot avail you against [the decree of] Allāh at all. The decision is only for Allāh; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let those who would rely [indeed] rely."

عَنْهُم
ʿanhumthem
مِّنَ
minaagainst
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahiAllah
مِن
minany
شَىْءٍ
shayinthing
إِلَّا
illābut
حَاجَةًۭ
ḥājatan(it was) a need
فِى
of
نَفْسِ
nafsiYaqub's soul
يَعْقُوبَ
yaʿqūbaYaqub's soul
قَضَىٰهَا ۚ
qaḍāhāwhich he carried out
وَإِنَّهُۥ
wa-innahuAnd indeed, he
لَذُو
ladhū(was) a possessor
عِلْمٍۢ
ʿil'min(of) knowledge
لِّمَا
limābecause
عَلَّمْنَـٰهُ
ʿallamnāhuWe had taught him
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
walākinnabut
أَكْثَرَ
aktharamost
ٱلنَّاسِ
l-nāsi(of) the people
لَا
(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَ
yaʿlamūnaknow
٦٨
(68)
And when they entered from where their father had ordered them, it did not avail them against Allāh at all except [it was] a need [i.e., concern] within the soul of Jacob, which he satisfied. And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most of the people do not know.

وَلَمَّا
walammāAnd when
دَخَلُوا۟

عَلَىٰ
ʿalāupon
يُوسُفَ

ءَاوَىٰٓ
āwāhe took
إِلَيْهِ

أَخَاهُ ۖ
akhāhuhis brother
قَالَ
qālaHe said
إِنِّىٓ
innīIndeed, I
أَنَا۠
anā[I] am
أَخُوكَ
akhūkayour brother
فَلَا
falāso (do) not
تَبْتَئِسْ
tabta-isgrieve
بِمَا
bimāfor what
كَانُوا۟
kānūthey used (to)
يَعْمَلُونَ
yaʿmalūnado
٦٩
(69)
And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his brother to himself; he said, "Indeed, I am your brother, so do not despair over what they used to do [to me]."

فَلَمَّا

جَهَّزَهُم
jahhazahumhe had furnished them
بِجَهَازِهِمْ
bijahāzihimwith their supplies
جَعَلَ
jaʿalahe put
ٱلسِّقَايَةَ
l-siqāyatathe drinking cup
فِى
in
رَحْلِ
raḥlithe bag
أَخِيهِ
akhīhi(of) his brother
ثُمَّ
thummaThen
أَذَّنَ
adhanacalled out
مُؤَذِّنٌ
mu-adhinunan announcer
أَيَّتُهَا
ayyatuhāO you
ٱلْعِيرُ
l-ʿīru(in) the caravan
إِنَّكُمْ
innakumIndeed, you
لَسَـٰرِقُونَ
lasāriqūnasurely (are) thieves
٧٠
(70)
So when he had furnished them with their supplies, he put the [gold measuring] bowl into the bag of his brother. Then an announcer called out, "O caravan, indeed you are thieves."

وَأَقْبَلُوا۟
wa-aqbalūturning towards
عَلَيْهِم
ʿalayhimthem
مَّاذَا
mādhāWhat (is it)
تَفْقِدُونَ

They said while approaching them, "What is it you are missing?"

نَفْقِدُ
nafqiduWe are missing
صُوَاعَ
ṣuwāʿa(the) cup
ٱلْمَلِكِ
l-maliki(of) the king
وَلِمَن
walimanAnd for (one) who
جَآءَ
jāabrings
بِهِۦ
bihiit
حِمْلُ
ḥim'lu(is) a load
بَعِيرٍۢ
baʿīrin(of) a camel
وَأَنَا۠
wa-anāand I
بِهِۦ
bihifor it
زَعِيمٌۭ
zaʿīmun(is) responsible
٧٢
(72)
They said, "We are missing the measure of the king. And for he who produces it is [the reward of] a camel's load, and I am responsible for it."

قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
تَٱللَّهِ
tal-lahiBy Allah
لَقَدْ
laqadcertainly
عَلِمْتُم
ʿalim'tumyou know
مَّا
not
جِئْنَا
ji'nāwe came
لِنُفْسِدَ
linuf'sidathat we cause corruption
فِى
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
l-arḍithe land
وَمَا
wamāand not
كُنَّا
kunnāwe are
سَـٰرِقِينَ
sāriqīnathieves
٧٣
(73)
They said, "By Allāh, you have certainly known that we did not come to cause corruption in the land, and we have not been thieves."

قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
فَمَا
famāThen what
جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥٓ
jazāuhu(will be the) recompense (of) it
إِن
inif
كُنتُمْ
kuntumyou are
كَـٰذِبِينَ
kādhibīnaliars
٧٤
(74)
They [the accusers] said, "Then what would be its recompense if you should be liars?"

قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥ
jazāuhuIts recompense
مَن
man(is that one) who
وُجِدَ
wujidait is found
فِى
in
رَحْلِهِۦ
raḥlihihis bag
فَهُوَ
fahuwathen he
جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥ ۚ
jazāuhu(will be) his recompense
كَذَٰلِكَ
kadhālikaThus
نَجْزِى
najzī(do) we recompense
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
l-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers
٧٥
(75)
[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense. Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."

ٱسْتَخْرَجَهَا
is'takhrajahāhe brought it out

وِعَآءِ
wiʿāi(the) bag
أَخِيهِ ۚ
akhīhi(of) his brother
كَذَٰلِكَ
kadhālikaThus
كِدْنَا
kid'nā(did) We plan
لِيُوسُفَ ۖ
liyūsufafor Yusuf
مَا
He could not
كَانَ
kānaHe could not
لِيَأْخُذَ
liyakhudhatake
أَخَاهُ
akhāhuhis brother
فِى
by
دِينِ
dīnithe law
ٱلْمَلِكِ
l-maliki(of) the king
إِلَّآ
illāexcept
أَن
anthat
يَشَآءَ
yashāaAllah willed
ٱللَّهُ ۚ
l-lahuAllah willed
نَرْفَعُ
narfaʿuWe raise
دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ
darajātin(in) degrees
مَّن
manwhom
نَّشَآءُ ۗ
nashāuWe will
وَفَوْقَ
wafawqabut over
كُلِّ
kullievery
ذِى
dhīpossessor
عِلْمٍ
ʿil'min(of) knowledge
عَلِيمٌۭ
ʿalīmun(is) the All-Knower
٧٦
(76)
So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion [i.e., law] of the king except that Allāh willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.

فَقَدْ

سَرَقَ

قَبْلُ ۚ

فَأَسَرَّهَا

شَرٌّۭ
sharrun(are the) worse
مَّكَانًۭا ۖ
makānan(in) position
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahuand Allah
أَعْلَمُ
aʿlamuknows best
بِمَا
bimāof what
تَصِفُونَ
taṣifūnayou describe
٧٧
(77)
They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, "You are worse in position, and Allāh is most knowing of what you describe."

قَالُوا۟

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
yāayyuhāO
ٱلْعَزِيزُ
l-ʿazīzuAziz
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
لَهُۥٓ

شَيْخًۭا
shaykhanold
كَبِيرًۭا
kabīran[great]
فَخُذْ
fakhudhso take
أَحَدَنَا
aḥadanāone of us
مَكَانَهُۥٓ ۖ
makānahu(in) his place
إِنَّا
innāIndeed, we
نَرَىٰكَ
narāka[we] see you
مِنَ
minaof
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
l-muḥ'sinīnathe good-doers
٧٨
(78)
They said, "O ʿAzeez, indeed he has a father [who is] an old man, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you as a doer of good."

مَعَاذَ
maʿādhaAllah forbid
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahiAllah forbid
أَن

نَّأْخُذَ
nakhudhawe take
إِلَّا
illāexcept
مَن
man(one) who
وَجَدْنَا
wajadnāwe found
مَتَـٰعَنَا
matāʿanāour possession
عِندَهُۥٓ
ʿindahuwith him
إِنَّآ
innāIndeed, we
إِذًۭا
idhanthen
لَّظَـٰلِمُونَ
laẓālimūnasurely (would be) wrongdoers
٧٩
(79)
He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh [to prevent] that we take except him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then be unjust."

فَلَمَّا

ٱسْتَيْـَٔسُوا۟
is'tayasūthey despaired
مِنْهُ

خَلَصُوا۟

نَجِيًّۭا ۖ

قَالَ

كَبِيرُهُمْ
kabīruhumthe eldest among them
أَلَمْ
alamDo not
تَعْلَمُوٓا۟
taʿlamūyou know
أَنَّ
annathat
أَبَاكُمْ
abākumyour father
قَدْ
qadhas taken
أَخَذَ
akhadhahas taken
عَلَيْكُم
ʿalaykumupon you
مَّوْثِقًۭا
mawthiqana promise
مِّنَ
minaby
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahiAllah
وَمِن
waminand before
قَبْلُ
qabluand before
مَا
that
فَرَّطتُمْ
farraṭtumyou failed
فِى
concerning
يُوسُفَ ۖ
yūsufaYusuf
فَلَنْ
falanSo never
أَبْرَحَ
abraḥawill I leave
ٱلْأَرْضَ
l-arḍathe land
حَتَّىٰ
ḥattāuntil
يَأْذَنَ
yadhanapermits
لِىٓ
me
أَبِىٓ
abīmy father
أَوْ
awor
يَحْكُمَ
yaḥkumaAllah decides
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahuAllah decides
لِى ۖ
for me
وَهُوَ
wahuwaand He
خَيْرُ
khayru(is) the Best
ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ
l-ḥākimīna(of) the judges
٨٠
(80)
So when they had despaired of him, they secluded themselves in private consultation. The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father has taken upon you an oath by Allāh and [that] before you failed in [your duty to] Joseph? So I will never leave [this] land until my father permits me or Allāh decides for me, and He is the best of judges.

ٱرْجِعُوٓا۟
ir'jiʿūReturn
إِلَىٰٓ
ilāto
أَبِيكُمْ
abīkumyour father
فَقُولُوا۟
faqūlūand say
يَـٰٓأَبَانَآ
yāabānā'O our father
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
ٱبْنَكَ
ib'nakayour son
سَرَقَ
saraqahas stolen
وَمَا
wamāand not
شَهِدْنَآ
shahid'nāwe testify
إِلَّا
illāexcept
بِمَا
bimāof what
عَلِمْنَا
ʿalim'nāwe knew
وَمَا
wamāAnd not
كُنَّا
kunnāwe were
لِلْغَيْبِ
lil'ghaybiof the unseen
حَـٰفِظِينَ
ḥāfiẓīnaguardians
٨١
(81)
Return to your father and say, 'O our father, indeed your son has stolen, and we did not testify except to what we knew. And we were not witnesses of the unseen.

وَسْـَٔلِ
wasaliAnd ask
ٱلْقَرْيَةَ
l-qaryatathe town
ٱلَّتِى
allatīwhere
كُنَّا
kunnāwe were
فِيهَا
fīhā[in it]
وَٱلْعِيرَ
wal-ʿīraand the caravan
ٱلَّتِىٓ
allatīwhich
أَقْبَلْنَا
aqbalnāwe returned
فِيهَا ۖ
fīhā[in it]
وَإِنَّا
wa-innāAnd indeed, we
لَصَـٰدِقُونَ
laṣādiqūnasurely (are) truthful.'
٨٢
(82)
And ask the city in which we were and the caravan in which we came - and indeed, we are truthful.'"

بَلْ
balNay
سَوَّلَتْ
sawwalathave enticed
لَكُمْ
lakumyou
أَنفُسُكُمْ
anfusukumyour souls
أَمْرًۭا ۖ
amransomething
فَصَبْرٌۭ
faṣabrunso patience
جَمِيلٌ ۖ
jamīlun(is) beautiful
عَسَى
ʿasāPerhaps
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahuAllah
أَن
anwill bring them to me
يَأْتِيَنِى
yatiyanīwill bring them to me
بِهِمْ
bihimwill bring them to me
جَمِيعًا ۚ
jamīʿanall
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed, He
هُوَ
huwaHe
ٱلْعَلِيمُ
l-ʿalīmu(is) the All-Knower
ٱلْحَكِيمُ
l-ḥakīmuAll-Wise
٨٣
(83)
[Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allāh will bring them to me all together. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise."

وَتَوَلَّىٰ
watawallāAnd he turned away
عَنْهُمْ
ʿanhumfrom them
وَقَالَ
waqālaand said
يَـٰٓأَسَفَىٰ
yāasafāAlas, my grief
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāover
يُوسُفَ
yūsufaYusuf
وَٱبْيَضَّتْ
wa-ib'yaḍḍatAnd became white
عَيْنَاهُ
ʿaynāhuhis eyes
مِنَ
minafrom
ٱلْحُزْنِ
l-ḥuz'nithe grief
فَهُوَ
fahuwaand he (was)
كَظِيمٌۭ
kaẓīmuna suppressor
٨٤
(84)
And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.

قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
تَٱللَّهِ
tal-lahiBy Allah
تَفْتَؤُا۟
tafta-uyou will not cease
تَذْكُرُ
tadhkururemembering
يُوسُفَ

حَتَّىٰ
ḥattāuntil
تَكُونَ
takūnayou become
حَرَضًا
ḥaraḍanfatally ill
أَوْ
awor
تَكُونَ
takūnabecome
مِنَ
minaof
ٱلْهَـٰلِكِينَ
l-hālikīnathose who perish
٨٥
(85)
They said, "By Allāh, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish."

إِنَّمَآ
innamāOnly
أَشْكُوا۟
ashkūI complain
بَثِّى
bathī(of) my suffering
وَحُزْنِىٓ
waḥuz'nīand my grief
إِلَى

ٱللَّهِ
l-lahiAllah
وَأَعْلَمُ
wa-aʿlamuand I know
مِنَ
minafrom
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahiAllah
مَا
what
لَا
not
تَعْلَمُونَ
taʿlamūnayou know
٨٦
(86)
He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh, and I know from Allāh that which you do not know.

فَتَحَسَّسُوا۟
fataḥassasūand inquire

wa-akhīhiand his brother
وَلَا
walāand not
تَا۟يْـَٔسُوا۟
tāy'asūdespair
مِن

رَّوْحِ
rawḥi(the) Mercy of Allah
ٱللَّهِ ۖ
l-lahi(the) Mercy of Allah
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed
لَا
none
يَا۟يْـَٔسُ
yāy'asudespairs
مِن
minof
رَّوْحِ
rawḥi(the) Mercy of Allah
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi(the) Mercy of Allah
إِلَّا
illāexcept
ٱلْقَوْمُ
l-qawmuthe people
ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ
l-kāfirūnathe disbelievers
٨٧
(87)
O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allāh. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allāh except the disbelieving people."

فَلَمَّا
falammāSo when
دَخَلُوا۟
dakhalūthey entered
عَلَيْهِ
ʿalayhiupon him
قَالُوا۟
qālūthey said
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
yāayyuhāO Aziz
ٱلْعَزِيزُ
l-ʿazīzuO Aziz
مَسَّنَا
massanāHas touched us
وَأَهْلَنَا
wa-ahlanāand our family
ٱلضُّرُّ
l-ḍuruthe adversity
وَجِئْنَا
waji'nāand we have come
بِبِضَـٰعَةٍۢ
bibiḍāʿatinwith goods
مُّزْجَىٰةٍۢ
muz'jātin(of) little value
فَأَوْفِ
fa-awfibut pay (in) full
لَنَا
lanāto us
ٱلْكَيْلَ
l-kaylathe measure
وَتَصَدَّقْ
wataṣaddaqand be charitable
عَلَيْنَآ ۖ
ʿalaynāto us
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
ٱللَّهَ
l-lahaAllah
يَجْزِى
yajzīrewards
ٱلْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ
l-mutaṣadiqīnathe charitable
٨٨
(88)
So when they entered upon him [i.e., Joseph], they said, "O ʿAzeez, adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods poor in quality, but give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allāh rewards the charitable."

جَـٰهِلُونَ
jāhilūnaignorant

(89)
He said, "Do you know what you did with Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?"

أَءِنَّكَ

لَأَنتَ

يُوسُفُ ۖ

yūsufuYusuf
وَهَـٰذَآ
wahādhāand this
أَخِى ۖ
akhī(is) my brother
قَدْ
qadIndeed
مَنَّ
mannaAllah has been gracious
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahuAllah has been gracious
عَلَيْنَآ ۖ
ʿalaynāto us
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed, he
مَن
manwho
يَتَّقِ
yattaqifears Allah
وَيَصْبِرْ
wayaṣbirand (is) patient
فَإِنَّ
fa-innathen indeed
ٱللَّهَ
l-lahaAllah
لَا
(does) not
يُضِيعُ
yuḍīʿulet go waste
أَجْرَ
ajra(the) reward
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
l-muḥ'sinīna(of) the good-doers
٩٠
(90)
They said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said, "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allāh has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allāh and is patient, then indeed, Allāh does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."

تَٱللَّهِ
tal-lahiBy Allah
لَقَدْ
laqadcertainly
ءَاثَرَكَ
ātharakaAllah has preferred you
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahuAllah has preferred you
عَلَيْنَا
ʿalaynāover us
وَإِن
wa-inand indeed
كُنَّا
kunnāwe have been
لَخَـٰطِـِٔينَ
lakhāṭiīnasinners
٩١
(91)
They said, "By Allāh, certainly has Allāh preferred you over us, and indeed, we have been sinners."

No
تَثْرِيبَ
tathrībablame
عَلَيْكُمُ
ʿalaykumuupon you
ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖ
l-yawmatoday
يَغْفِرُ
yaghfiruAllah will forgive
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahuAllah will forgive
لَكُمْ ۖ
lakumyou
وَهُوَ
wahuwaand He
أَرْحَمُ
arḥamu(is) the Most Merciful
ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
l-rāḥimīna(of) those who show mercy
٩٢
(92)
He said, "No blame will there be upon you today. May Allāh forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful.

biqamīṣīwith this shirt of mine
هَـٰذَا
hādhāwith this shirt of mine
فَأَلْقُوهُ
fa-alqūhuand cast it
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāover
وَجْهِ
wajhi(the) face
أَبِى
abī(of) my father
يَأْتِ
yatihe will regain sight
بَصِيرًۭا
baṣīranhe will regain sight
وَأْتُونِى
watūnīAnd bring to me
بِأَهْلِكُمْ
bi-ahlikumyour family
أَجْمَعِينَ
ajmaʿīnaall together
٩٣
(93)
Take this, my shirt, and cast it over the face of my father; he will become seeing. And bring me your family, all together."

وَلَمَّا
walammāAnd when
فَصَلَتِ
faṣalatideparted
ٱلْعِيرُ
l-ʿīruthe caravan
قَالَ
qālatheir father said
أَبُوهُمْ
abūhumtheir father said
إِنِّى
innīIndeed, I
لَأَجِدُ
la-ajidu[I] find
رِيحَ
rīḥa(the) smell
يُوسُفَ ۖ
yūsufa(of) Yusuf
لَوْلَآ
lawlāif not
أَن
anthat
تُفَنِّدُونِ
tufannidūniyou think me weakened in mind
٩٤
(94)
And when the caravan departed [from Egypt], their father said, "Indeed, I find the smell of Joseph [and would say that he was alive] if you did not think me weakened in mind."

تَٱللَّهِ
tal-lahiBy Allah
إِنَّكَ

لَفِى
lafīsurely (are) in
ضَلَـٰلِكَ

ٱلْقَدِيمِ
l-qadīmiold
٩٥
(95)
They said, "By Allāh, indeed you are in your [same] old error."

ٱلْبَشِيرُ
l-bashīruthe bearer of glad tidings
أَلْقَىٰهُ
alqāhuhe cast it
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāover
وَجْهِهِۦ
wajhihihis face
فَٱرْتَدَّ
fa-ir'taddathen returned (his) sight
بَصِيرًۭا ۖ
baṣīranthen returned (his) sight
قَالَ
qālaHe said
أَلَمْ
alamDid not
أَقُل
aqulI say
لَّكُمْ
lakumto you
إِنِّىٓ
innīindeed, I
أَعْلَمُ
aʿlamu[I] know
مِنَ
minafrom
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahiAllah
مَا
what
لَا
not
تَعْلَمُونَ
taʿlamūnayou know
٩٦
(96)
And when the bearer of good tidings arrived, he cast it over his face, and he returned [once again] seeing. He said, "Did I not tell you that I know from Allāh that which you do not know?"

قَالُوا۟

يَـٰٓأَبَانَا
yāabānāO our father
ٱسْتَغْفِرْ
is'taghfirAsk forgiveness
لَنَا
lanāfor us
ذُنُوبَنَآ
dhunūbanā(of) our sins
إِنَّا
innāIndeed, we
كُنَّا
kunnāhave been
خَـٰطِـِٔينَ
khāṭiīnasinners
٩٧
(97)
They said, "O our father, ask for us forgiveness of our sins; indeed, we have been sinners."

sawfaSoon
أَسْتَغْفِرُ
astaghfiruI will ask forgiveness
لَكُمْ

رَبِّىٓ ۖ
rabbī(from) my Lord
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed, He
هُوَ
huwaHe
ٱلْغَفُورُ
l-ghafūru(is) the Oft-Forgiving
ٱلرَّحِيمُ
l-raḥīmuthe Most Merciful
٩٨
(98)
He said, "I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

أَبَوَيْهِ

وَقَالَ

ٱدْخُلُوا۟
ud'khulūEnter
مِصْرَ
miṣ'raEgypt
إِن
inif
شَآءَ
shāaAllah wills
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahuAllah wills
ءَامِنِينَ
āminīnasafe
٩٩
(99)
And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his parents to himself [i.e., embraced them] and said, "Enter Egypt, Allāh willing, safe [and secure]."

وَرَفَعَ
warafaʿaAnd he raised
أَبَوَيْهِ
abawayhihis parents
عَلَى
ʿalāupon
ٱلْعَرْشِ
l-ʿarshithe throne
وَخَرُّوا۟
wakharrūand they fell down
لَهُۥ
lahuto him
سُجَّدًۭا ۖ
sujjadanprostrate
وَقَالَ
waqālaAnd he said
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ
yāabatiO my father
هَـٰذَا
hādhāThis
تَأْوِيلُ
tawīlu(is the) interpretation
رُءْيَـٰىَ
ru'yāya(of) my dream
مِن
min(of) before
قَبْلُ
qablu(of) before
قَدْ
qadVerily
جَعَلَهَا
jaʿalahāhas made it
رَبِّى
rabbīmy Lord
حَقًّۭا ۖ
ḥaqqantrue
وَقَدْ
waqadAnd indeed
أَحْسَنَ
aḥsanaHe was good
بِىٓ
to me
إِذْ
idhwhen
أَخْرَجَنِى
akhrajanīHe took me out
مِنَ
minaof
ٱلسِّجْنِ
l-sij'nithe prison
وَجَآءَ
wajāaand brought
بِكُم
bikumyou
مِّنَ
minafrom
ٱلْبَدْوِ
l-badwithe bedouin life
مِنۢ
minafter
بَعْدِ
baʿdiafter
أَن
an[that]
نَّزَغَ
nazaghahad caused discord
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ
l-shayṭānuthe Shaitaan
بَيْنِى
baynībetween me
وَبَيْنَ
wabaynaand between
إِخْوَتِىٓ ۚ
ikh'watīmy brothers
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
رَبِّى
rabbīmy Lord
لَطِيفٌۭ
laṭīfun(is) Most Subtle
لِّمَا
limāto what
يَشَآءُ ۚ
yashāuHe wills
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed, He
هُوَ
huwaHe
ٱلْعَلِيمُ
l-ʿalīmu(is) the All-Knower
ٱلْحَكِيمُ
l-ḥakīmuthe All-Wise
١٠٠
(100)
And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration. And he said, "O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you [here] from bedouin life after Satan had induced [estrangement] between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise.

ءَاتَيْتَنِى

مِنَ

ٱلْمُلْكِ
l-mul'kithe sovereignty
وَعَلَّمْتَنِى
waʿallamtanīand taught me
مِن
minof
تَأْوِيلِ
tawīlithe interpretation
ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ
l-aḥādīthiof the events
فَاطِرَ
fāṭiraCreator
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ
l-samāwāti(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
wal-arḍiand the earth
أَنتَ
antaYou
وَلِىِّۦ
waliyyī(are) my Protector
فِى
in
ٱلدُّنْيَا
l-dun'yāthe world
وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ
wal-ākhiratiand the Hereafter
تَوَفَّنِى
tawaffanīCause me to die
مُسْلِمًۭا
mus'liman(as) a Muslim
وَأَلْحِقْنِى
wa-alḥiq'nīand join me
بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
bil-ṣāliḥīnawith the righteous
١٠١
(101)
My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous."

ذَٰلِكَ

أَنۢبَآءِ

ٱلْغَيْبِ
l-ghaybi(of) the unseen
نُوحِيهِ
nūḥīhiwhich We reveal
إِلَيْكَ ۖ
ilaykato you
وَمَا
wamāAnd not
كُنتَ
kuntayou were
لَدَيْهِمْ
ladayhimwith them
إِذْ
idhwhen
أَجْمَعُوٓا۟
ajmaʿūthey put together
أَمْرَهُمْ
amrahumtheir plan
وَهُمْ
wahumwhile they
يَمْكُرُونَ
yamkurūna(were) plotting
١٠٢
(102)
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muḥammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired.

وَمَآ
wamāAnd not
أَكْثَرُ
aktharumost
ٱلنَّاسِ
l-nāsi(of) the mankind
وَلَوْ
walaweven though
حَرَصْتَ
ḥaraṣtayou desire
بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
bimu'minīna(will be) believers
١٠٣
(103)
And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers.

وَمَا
wamāAnd not
تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ
tasaluhumyou ask them
عَلَيْهِ
ʿalayhifor it
مِنْ
minany
أَجْرٍ ۚ
ajrinreward
إِنْ
inNot
هُوَ
huwa(is) it
إِلَّا
illābut
ذِكْرٌۭ
dhik'runa reminder
لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
lil'ʿālamīnato the worlds
١٠٤
(104)
And you do not ask of them for it any payment. It is not except a reminder to the worlds.

وَكَأَيِّن
waka-ayyinAnd how many
مِّنْ
minof
ءَايَةٍۢ
āyatina Sign
فِى
in
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ
l-samāwātithe heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
wal-arḍiand the earth
يَمُرُّونَ
yamurrūnathey pass
عَلَيْهَا
ʿalayhāover it
وَهُمْ
wahumwhile they
عَنْهَا
ʿanhā(are) from them
مُعْرِضُونَ
muʿ'riḍūnathe ones who turn away
١٠٥
(105)
And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass over while they, therefrom, are turning away.

وَمَا
wamāAnd not
يُؤْمِنُ
yu'minubelieve
أَكْثَرُهُم
aktharuhummost of them
بِٱللَّهِ
bil-lahiin Allah
إِلَّا
illāexcept
وَهُم
wahumwhile they
مُّشْرِكُونَ
mush'rikūnaassociate partners with Him
١٠٦
(106)
And most of them believe not in Allāh except while they associate others with Him.

أَفَأَمِنُوٓا۟
afa-aminūDo they then feel secure
أَن
an(against) that
تَأْتِيَهُمْ
tatiyahumcomes to them
غَـٰشِيَةٌۭ
ghāshiyatunan overwhelming
مِّنْ
min[of]
عَذَابِ
ʿadhābipunishment
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi(of) Allah
أَوْ
awor
تَأْتِيَهُمُ
tatiyahumucomes to them
ٱلسَّاعَةُ
l-sāʿatuthe Hour
بَغْتَةًۭ
baghtatansuddenly
وَهُمْ
wahumwhile they
لَا
(do) not
يَشْعُرُونَ
yashʿurūnaperceive
١٠٧
(107)
Then do they feel secure that there will not come to them an overwhelming [aspect] of the punishment of Allāh or that the Hour will not come upon them suddenly while they do not perceive?

قُلْ
qulSay
هَـٰذِهِۦ
hādhihiThis
سَبِيلِىٓ
sabīlī(is) my way
أَدْعُوٓا۟
adʿūI invite
إِلَى
ilāto
ٱللَّهِ ۚ
l-lahiAllah
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāwith
بَصِيرَةٍ
baṣīratininsight
أَنَا۠
anāI
وَمَنِ
wamaniand whoever
ٱتَّبَعَنِى ۖ
ittabaʿanīfollows me
وَسُبْحَـٰنَ
wasub'ḥānaAnd Glory be
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi(to) Allah
وَمَآ
wamāand not
أَنَا۠
anāI am
مِنَ
minaof
ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
l-mush'rikīnathe polytheists
١٠٨
(108)
Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allāh with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allāh; and I am not of those who associate others with Him."

أَرْسَلْنَا
arsalnāWe sent
مِن
minbefore you
قَبْلِكَ
qablikabefore you
إِلَّا
illābut
رِجَالًۭا
rijālanmen
نُّوحِىٓ
nūḥīWe revealed
إِلَيْهِم
ilayhimto them
مِّنْ
minfrom (among)
أَهْلِ
ahli(the) people
ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ ۗ
l-qurā(of) the townships
أَفَلَمْ
afalamSo have not
يَسِيرُوا۟
yasīrūthey traveled
فِى
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
l-arḍithe earth
فَيَنظُرُوا۟
fayanẓurūand seen
كَيْفَ
kayfahow
كَانَ
kānawas
عَـٰقِبَةُ
ʿāqibatu(the) end
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna(of) those who
مِن
min(were) before them
قَبْلِهِمْ ۗ
qablihim(were) before them
وَلَدَارُ
waladāruAnd surely the home
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ
l-ākhirati(of) the Hereafter
خَيْرٌۭ
khayrun(is) best
لِّلَّذِينَ
lilladhīnafor those who
ٱتَّقَوْا۟ ۗ
ittaqawfear Allah
أَفَلَا
afalāThen will not
تَعْقِلُونَ
taʿqilūnayou use reason
١٠٩
(109)
And We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities. So have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allāh; then will you not reason?

حَتَّىٰٓ
ḥattāUntil
إِذَا
idhāwhen
ٱسْتَيْـَٔسَ
is'tayasagave up hope
ٱلرُّسُلُ
l-rusuluthe Messengers
وَظَنُّوٓا۟
waẓannūand thought
أَنَّهُمْ
annahumthat they
قَدْ
qadcertainly
كُذِبُوا۟
kudhibūwere denied
جَآءَهُمْ
jāahumthen came to them
نَصْرُنَا
naṣrunāOur help
فَنُجِّىَ
fanujjiyaand was saved
مَن
manwhom
نَّشَآءُ ۖ
nashāuWe willed
وَلَا
walāAnd not
يُرَدُّ
yuraddu(can) be repelled
بَأْسُنَا
basunāOur punishment
عَنِ
ʿanifrom
ٱلْقَوْمِ
l-qawmithe people
ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
l-muj'rimīna(who are) criminals
١١٠
(110)
[They continued] until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals.

لَقَدْ
laqadVerily
كَانَ
kāna(there) is
فِى
in
قَصَصِهِمْ
qaṣaṣihimtheir stories
عِبْرَةٌۭ
ʿib'ratuna lesson
لِّأُو۟لِى
li-ulīfor men
ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ ۗ
l-albābi(of) understanding
مَا
Not
كَانَ
kāna(it) is
حَدِيثًۭا
ḥadīthana narration
يُفْتَرَىٰ
yuf'tarāinvented
وَلَـٰكِن
walākinbut
تَصْدِيقَ
taṣdīqaa confirmation
ٱلَّذِى
alladhī(of that) which
بَيْنَ
bayna(was) before it
يَدَيْهِ
yadayhi(was) before it
وَتَفْصِيلَ
watafṣīlaand a detailed explanation
كُلِّ
kulli(of) all
شَىْءٍۢ
shayinthings
وَهُدًۭى
wahudanand a guidance
وَرَحْمَةًۭ
waraḥmatanand mercy
لِّقَوْمٍۢ
liqawminfor a people
يُؤْمِنُونَ
yu'minūnawho believe
١١١
(111)
There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was it [i.e., the Qur’ān] a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.
