noonNun
وَٱلْقَلَمِ
wal-qalamiBy the pen
وَمَا
wamāand what
يَسْطُرُونَ
yasṭurūnathey write
١
(1)
Nūn. By the pen and what they inscribe,

مَآ
Not
أَنتَ
antayou (are)
بِنِعْمَةِ
biniʿ'matiby (the) Grace
رَبِّكَ
rabbika(of) your Lord
بِمَجْنُونٍۢ
bimajnūnina madman
٢
(2)
You are not, [O Muḥammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.

وَإِنَّ
wa-innaAnd indeed
لَكَ
lakafor you
لَأَجْرًا
la-ajransurely (is) a reward
غَيْرَ
ghayrawithout
مَمْنُونٍۢ
mamnūninend
٣
(3)
And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.

وَإِنَّكَ
wa-innakaAnd indeed, you
لَعَلَىٰ
laʿalāsurely (are)
خُلُقٍ
khuluqin(of) a moral character
عَظِيمٍۢ
ʿaẓīmingreat
٤
(4)
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

فَسَتُبْصِرُ
fasatub'ṣiruSo you will see
وَيُبْصِرُونَ
wayub'ṣirūnaand they will see
٥
(5)
So you will see and they will see

بِأَييِّكُمُ
bi-ayyikumuWhich of you
ٱلْمَفْتُونُ
l-maftūnu(is) the afflicted one
٦
(6)
Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].

إِنَّ
innaIndeed
رَبَّكَ
rabbakayour Lord
هُوَ
huwaHe
أَعْلَمُ
aʿlamu(is) most knowing
بِمَن
bimanof (he) who
ضَلَّ
ḍallahas strayed
عَن
ʿanfrom
سَبِيلِهِۦ
sabīlihiHis way
وَهُوَ
wahuwaand He
أَعْلَمُ
aʿlamu(is) most knowing
بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ
bil-muh'tadīnaof the guided ones
٧
(7)
Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

فَلَا
falāSo (do) not
تُطِعِ
tuṭiʿiobey
ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
l-mukadhibīnathe deniers
٨
(8)
Then do not obey the deniers.

وَدُّوا۟
waddūThey wish
لَوْ
lawthat
تُدْهِنُ
tud'hinuyou should compromise
فَيُدْهِنُونَ
fayud'hinūnaso they would compromise
٩
(9)
They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].

وَلَا
walāAnd (do) not
تُطِعْ
tuṭiʿobey
كُلَّ
kullaevery
حَلَّافٍۢ
ḥallāfinhabitual swearer
مَّهِينٍ
mahīninworthless
١٠
(10)
And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer

هَمَّازٍۢ
hammāzinDefamer
مَّشَّآءٍۭ
mashāingoing about
بِنَمِيمٍۢ
binamīminwith malicious gossip

(11)
[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -

مَّنَّاعٍۢ
mannāʿinA preventer
لِّلْخَيْرِ
lil'khayriof (the) good
مُعْتَدٍ
muʿ'tadintransgressor
أَثِيمٍ
athīminsinful

(12)
A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,

عُتُلٍّۭ
ʿutullinCruel
بَعْدَ
baʿdaafter
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālika(all) that
زَنِيمٍ
zanīminutterly useless
١٣
(13)
Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.

أَن
anBecause
كَانَ
kāna(he) is
ذَا
dhāa possessor
مَالٍۢ
mālin(of) wealth
وَبَنِينَ
wabanīnaand children
١٤
(14)
Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,

إِذَا
idhāWhen
تُتْلَىٰ
tut'lāare recited
عَلَيْهِ
ʿalayhito him
ءَايَـٰتُنَا
āyātunāOur Verses
قَالَ
qālahe says
أَسَـٰطِيرُ
asāṭīruStories
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
l-awalīna(of) the former (people)
١٥
(15)
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."

سَنَسِمُهُۥ
sanasimuhuWe will brand him
عَلَى
ʿalāon
ٱلْخُرْطُومِ
l-khur'ṭūmithe snout
١٦
(16)
We will brand him upon the snout.

إِنَّا
innāIndeed, We
بَلَوْنَـٰهُمْ
balawnāhumhave tried them
كَمَا
kamāas
بَلَوْنَآ
balawnāWe tried
أَصْحَـٰبَ
aṣḥāba(the) companions
ٱلْجَنَّةِ
l-janati(of) the garden
إِذْ
idhwhen
أَقْسَمُوا۟
aqsamūthey swore
لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا
layaṣrimunnahāto pluck its fruit
مُصْبِحِينَ
muṣ'biḥīna(in the) morning
١٧
(17)
Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

وَلَا
walāAnd not
يَسْتَثْنُونَ
yastathnūnamaking exception
١٨
(18)
Without making exception.

فَطَافَ
faṭāfaSo there came
عَلَيْهَا
ʿalayhāupon it
طَآئِفٌۭ
ṭāifuna visitation
مِّن
minfrom
رَّبِّكَ
rabbikayour Lord
وَهُمْ
wahumwhile they
نَآئِمُونَ
nāimūnawere asleep
١٩
(19)
So there came upon it [i.e., the garden] an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.

فَأَصْبَحَتْ
fa-aṣbaḥatSo it became
كَٱلصَّرِيمِ
kal-ṣarīmias if reaped
٢٠
(20)
And it became as though reaped.

فَتَنَادَوْا۟
fatanādawAnd they called one another
مُصْبِحِينَ
muṣ'biḥīna(at) morning
٢١
(21)
And they called one another at morning,

أَنِ
aniThat
ٱغْدُوا۟
igh'dūGo early
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāto
حَرْثِكُمْ
ḥarthikumyour crop
إِن
inif
كُنتُمْ
kuntumyou would
صَـٰرِمِينَ
ṣārimīnapluck (the) fruit
٢٢
(22)
[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."

فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟
fa-inṭalaqūSo they went
وَهُمْ
wahumwhile they
يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ
yatakhāfatūnalowered (their) voices
٢٣
(23)
So they set out, while lowering their voices,

أَن
anThat
لَّا
Not
يَدْخُلَنَّهَا
yadkhulannahāwill enter it
ٱلْيَوْمَ
l-yawmatoday
عَلَيْكُم
ʿalaykumupon you
مِّسْكِينٌۭ
mis'kīnunany poor person
٢٤
(24)
[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."

وَغَدَوْا۟
waghadawAnd they went early
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāwith
حَرْدٍۢ
ḥardindetermination
قَـٰدِرِينَ
qādirīnaable
٢٥
(25)
And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.

فَلَمَّا
falammāBut when
رَأَوْهَا
ra-awhāthey saw it
قَالُوٓا۟
qālūthey said
إِنَّا
innāIndeed, we
لَضَآلُّونَ
laḍāllūna(are) surely lost
٢٦
(26)
But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;

بَلْ
balNay
نَحْنُ
naḥnuWe
مَحْرُومُونَ
maḥrūmūna(are) deprived
٢٧
(27)
Rather, we have been deprived."

قَالَ
qālaSaid
أَوْسَطُهُمْ
awsaṭuhum(the) most moderate of them
أَلَمْ
alamDid not
أَقُل
aqulI tell
لَّكُمْ
lakumyou
لَوْلَا
lawlā'Why not
تُسَبِّحُونَ
tusabbiḥūnayou glorify (Allah)?'
٢٨
(28)
The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allāh]?'"

قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
سُبْحَـٰنَ
sub'ḥānaGlory be
رَبِّنَآ
rabbinā(to) our Lord
إِنَّا
innāIndeed, we
كُنَّا
kunnā[we] were
ظَـٰلِمِينَ
ẓālimīnawrongdoers
٢٩
(29)
They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."

فَأَقْبَلَ
fa-aqbalaThen approached
بَعْضُهُمْ
baʿḍuhumsome of them
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāto
بَعْضٍۢ
baʿḍinothers
يَتَلَـٰوَمُونَ
yatalāwamūnablaming each other
٣٠
(30)
Then they approached one another, blaming each other.

قَالُوا۟
qālūThey said
يَـٰوَيْلَنَآ
yāwaylanāO woe to us
إِنَّا
innāIndeed, we
كُنَّا
kunnā[we] were
طَـٰغِينَ
ṭāghīnatransgressors
٣١
(31)
They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.

عَسَىٰ
ʿasāPerhaps
رَبُّنَآ
rabbunāour Lord
أَن
an[that]
يُبْدِلَنَا
yub'dilanāwill substitute for us
خَيْرًۭا
khayrana better
مِّنْهَآ
min'hāthan it
إِنَّآ
innāIndeed, we
إِلَىٰ
ilāto
رَبِّنَا
rabbināour Lord
رَٰغِبُونَ
rāghibūnaturn devoutly
٣٢
(32)
Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."

كَذَٰلِكَ
kadhālikaSuch
ٱلْعَذَابُ ۖ
l-ʿadhābu(is) the punishment
وَلَعَذَابُ
walaʿadhābuAnd surely the punishment
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ
l-ākhirati(of) the Hereafter
أَكْبَرُ ۚ
akbaru(is) greater
لَوْ
lawif
كَانُوا۟
kānūthey
يَعْلَمُونَ
yaʿlamūnaknow
٣٣
(33)
Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.

إِنَّ
innaIndeed
لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
lil'muttaqīnafor the righteous
عِندَ
ʿindawith
رَبِّهِمْ
rabbihimtheir Lord
جَنَّـٰتِ
jannāti(are) Gardens
ٱلنَّعِيمِ
l-naʿīmi(of) Delight
٣٤
(34)
Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.

أَفَنَجْعَلُ
afanajʿaluThen will We treat
ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ
l-mus'limīnathe Muslims
كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
kal-muj'rimīnalike the criminals
٣٥
(35)
Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?

مَا
What
لَكُمْ
lakum(is) for you
كَيْفَ
kayfaHow
تَحْكُمُونَ
taḥkumūna(do) you judge
٣٦
(36)
What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?

أَمْ
amOr
لَكُمْ
lakum(is) for you
كِتَـٰبٌۭ
kitābuna book
فِيهِ
fīhiwherein
تَدْرُسُونَ
tadrusūnayou learn
٣٧
(37)
Or do you have a scripture in which you learn

إِنَّ
innaIndeed
لَكُمْ
lakumfor you
فِيهِ
fīhiin it
لَمَا
lamāwhat
تَخَيَّرُونَ
takhayyarūnayou choose
٣٨
(38)
That indeed for you is whatever you choose?

أَمْ
amOr
لَكُمْ
lakumfor you
أَيْمَـٰنٌ
aymānunoaths
عَلَيْنَا
ʿalaynāfrom us
بَـٰلِغَةٌ
bālighatunreaching
إِلَىٰ
ilāto
يَوْمِ
yawmi(the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۙ
l-qiyāmati(of) the Resurrection
إِنَّ
innaindeed
لَكُمْ
lakumfor you
لَمَا
lamā(is) what
تَحْكُمُونَ
taḥkumūnayou judge
٣٩
(39)
Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?

سَلْهُمْ
salhumAsk them
أَيُّهُم
ayyuhumwhich of them
بِذَٰلِكَ
bidhālikafor that
زَعِيمٌ
zaʿīmun(is) responsible
٤٠
(40)
Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.

أَمْ
amOr
لَهُمْ
lahum(are) for them
شُرَكَآءُ
shurakāupartners
فَلْيَأْتُوا۟
falyatūThen let them bring
بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ
bishurakāihimtheir partners
إِن
inif
كَانُوا۟
kānūthey are
صَـٰدِقِينَ
ṣādiqīnatruthful
٤١
(41)
Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.

يَوْمَ
yawma(The) Day
يُكْشَفُ
yuk'shafuwill be uncovered
عَن
ʿanfrom
سَاقٍۢ
sāqinthe shin
وَيُدْعَوْنَ
wayud'ʿawnaand they will be called
إِلَى
ilāto
ٱلسُّجُودِ
l-sujūdiprostrate
فَلَا
falābut not
يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
yastaṭīʿūnathey will be able
٤٢
(42)
The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but they [i.e., the disbelievers] will not be able,

خَـٰشِعَةً
khāshiʿatanHumbled
أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ
abṣāruhumtheir eyes
تَرْهَقُهُمْ
tarhaquhumwill cover them
ذِلَّةٌۭ ۖ
dhillatunhumiliation
وَقَدْ
waqadAnd indeed
كَانُوا۟
kānūthey were
يُدْعَوْنَ
yud'ʿawnacalled
إِلَى
ilāto
ٱلسُّجُودِ
l-sujūdiprostrate
وَهُمْ
wahumwhile they
سَـٰلِمُونَ
sālimūna(were) sound
٤٣
(43)
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.

فَذَرْنِى
fadharnīSo leave Me
وَمَن
wamanand whoever
يُكَذِّبُ
yukadhibudenies
بِهَـٰذَا
bihādhāthis
ٱلْحَدِيثِ ۖ
l-ḥadīthiStatement
سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم
sanastadrijuhumWe will progressively lead them
مِّنْ
minfrom
حَيْثُ
ḥaythuwhere
لَا
not
يَعْلَمُونَ
yaʿlamūnathey know
٤٤
(44)
So leave Me, [O Muḥammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies this statement [i.e., the Qur’ān]. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.

وَأُمْلِى
wa-um'līAnd I will give respite
لَهُمْ ۚ
lahumto them
إِنَّ
innaIndeed
كَيْدِى
kaydīMy plan
مَتِينٌ
matīnun(is) firm
٤٥
(45)
And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.

أَمْ
amOr
تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ
tasaluhumyou ask them
أَجْرًۭا
ajrana payment
فَهُم
fahumso they
مِّن
minfrom
مَّغْرَمٍۢ
maghramin(the) debt
مُّثْقَلُونَ
muth'qalūna(are) burdened
٤٦
(46)
Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?

أَمْ
amOr
عِندَهُمُ
ʿindahumu(is) with them
ٱلْغَيْبُ
l-ghaybuthe unseen
فَهُمْ
fahumso they
يَكْتُبُونَ
yaktubūnawrite it
٤٧
(47)
Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?

فَٱصْبِرْ
fa-iṣ'birSo be patient
لِحُكْمِ
liḥuk'mifor (the) decision
رَبِّكَ
rabbika(of) your Lord
وَلَا
walāand (do) not
تَكُن
takunbe
كَصَاحِبِ
kaṣāḥibilike (the) companion
ٱلْحُوتِ
l-ḥūti(of) the fish
إِذْ
idhwhen
نَادَىٰ
nādāhe called out
وَهُوَ
wahuwawhile he
مَكْظُومٌۭ
makẓūmun(was) distressed
٤٨
(48)
Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muḥammad], and be not like the companion of the fish [i.e., Jonah] when he called out while he was distressed.

لَّوْلَآ
lawlāIf not
أَن
anthat
تَدَٰرَكَهُۥ
tadārakahuovertook him
نِعْمَةٌۭ
niʿ'matuna Favor
مِّن
minfrom
رَّبِّهِۦ
rabbihihis Lord
لَنُبِذَ
lanubidhasurely he would have been thrown
بِٱلْعَرَآءِ
bil-ʿarāionto (the) naked shore
وَهُوَ
wahuwawhile he
مَذْمُومٌۭ
madhmūmun(was) blamed
٤٩
(49)
If not that a favor [i.e., mercy] from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.

فَٱجْتَبَـٰهُ
fa-ij'tabāhuBut chose him
رَبُّهُۥ
rabbuhuhis Lord
فَجَعَلَهُۥ
fajaʿalahuand made him
مِنَ
minaof
ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
l-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous
٥٠
(50)
And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

وَإِن
wa-inAnd indeed
يَكَادُ
yakāduwould almost
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīnathose who
كَفَرُوا۟
kafarūdisbelieve
لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ
layuz'liqūnakasurely make you slip
بِأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ
bi-abṣārihimwith their look
لَمَّا
lammāwhen
سَمِعُوا۟
samiʿūthey hear
ٱلذِّكْرَ
l-dhik'rathe Message
وَيَقُولُونَ
wayaqūlūnaand they say
إِنَّهُۥ
innahuIndeed, he
لَمَجْنُونٌۭ
lamajnūnun(is) surely mad
٥١
(51)
And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes [i.e., looks] when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."

وَمَا
wamāAnd not
هُوَ
huwait (is)
إِلَّا
illābut
ذِكْرٌۭ
dhik'runa Reminder
لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
lil'ʿālamīnato the worlds
٥٢
(52)
But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
