سَأَلَ
sa-alaAsked
سَآئِلٌۢ
sāiluna questioner
بِعَذَابٍۢ
biʿadhābinabout a punishment
وَاقِعٍۢ
wāqiʿinbound to happen

(1)
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen

لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
lil'kāfirīnaTo the disbelievers
لَيْسَ
laysanot
لَهُۥ
lahuof it
دَافِعٌۭ
dāfiʿunany preventer
٢
(2)
To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.

مِّنَ
minaFrom
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahiAllah
ذِى
dhīOwner
ٱلْمَعَارِجِ
l-maʿāriji(of) the ways of ascent
٣
(3)
[It is] from Allāh, owner of the ways of ascent.

تَعْرُجُ
taʿrujuAscend
ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ
l-malāikatuthe Angels
وَٱلرُّوحُ
wal-rūḥuand the Spirit
إِلَيْهِ
ilayhito Him
فِى
in
يَوْمٍۢ
yawmina Day
كَانَ
kāna[is]
مِقْدَارُهُۥ
miq'dāruhuits measure
خَمْسِينَ
khamsīna(is) fifty
أَلْفَ
alfathousand
سَنَةٍۢ
sanatinyear(s)
٤
(4)
The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.

فَٱصْبِرْ
fa-iṣ'birSo be patient
صَبْرًۭا
ṣabrana patience
جَمِيلًا
jamīlangood
٥
(5)
So be patient with gracious patience.

إِنَّهُمْ
innahumIndeed, they
يَرَوْنَهُۥ
yarawnahusee it
بَعِيدًۭا
baʿīdan(as) far off
٦
(6)
Indeed, they see it [as] distant,

وَنَرَىٰهُ
wanarāhuBut We see it
قَرِيبًۭا
qarībannear
٧
(7)
But We see it [as] near.

يَوْمَ
yawma(The) Day
تَكُونُ
takūnuwill be
ٱلسَّمَآءُ
l-samāuthe sky
كَٱلْمُهْلِ
kal-muh'lilike molten copper
٨
(8)
On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,

وَتَكُونُ
watakūnuAnd will be
ٱلْجِبَالُ
l-jibāluthe mountains
كَٱلْعِهْنِ
kal-ʿih'nilike wool
٩
(9)
And the mountains will be like wool,

10
وَلَا
walāAnd not
يَسْـَٔلُ
yasaluwill ask
حَمِيمٌ
ḥamīmuna friend
حَمِيمًۭا
ḥamīman(about) a friend
١٠
(10)
And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,

11
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ
yubaṣṣarūnahumThey will be made to see each other
يَوَدُّ
yawadduWould wish
ٱلْمُجْرِمُ
l-muj'rimuthe criminal
لَوْ
lawif
يَفْتَدِى
yaftadīhe (could be) ransomed
مِنْ
minfrom
عَذَابِ
ʿadhābi(the) punishment
يَوْمِئِذٍۭ
yawmi-idhin(of) that Day
بِبَنِيهِ
bibanīhiby his children

(11)
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ
waṣāḥibatihiAnd his spouse
وَأَخِيهِ
wa-akhīhiand his brother
١٢
(12)
And his wife and his brother

13
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ
wafaṣīlatihiAnd his nearest kindred
ٱلَّتِى
allatīwho
تُـْٔوِيهِ
tu'wīhisheltered him
١٣
(13)
And his nearest kindred who shelter him

14
وَمَن
wamanAnd whoever
فِى
(is) on
ٱلْأَرْضِ
l-arḍithe earth
جَمِيعًۭا
jamīʿanall
ثُمَّ
thummathen
يُنجِيهِ
yunjīhiit (could) save him
١٤
(14)
And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.

كَلَّآ ۖ
kallāBy no means
إِنَّهَا
innahāIndeed, it (is)
لَظَىٰ
laẓāsurely a Flame of Hell
١٥
(15)
No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],

نَزَّاعَةًۭ
nazzāʿatanA remover
لِّلشَّوَىٰ
lilshawāof the skin of the head
١٦
(16)
A remover of exteriors.

17
تَدْعُوا۟
tadʿūInviting
مَنْ
man(him) who
أَدْبَرَ
adbaraturned his back
وَتَوَلَّىٰ
watawallāand went away
١٧
(17)
It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]

وَجَمَعَ
wajamaʿaAnd collected
فَأَوْعَىٰٓ
fa-awʿāand hoarded
١٨
(18)
And collected [wealth] and hoarded.

19
۞ إِنَّ
innaIndeed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ
l-insānathe man
خُلِقَ
khuliqawas created
هَلُوعًا
halūʿananxious
١٩
(19)
Indeed, mankind was created anxious:

20
إِذَا
idhāWhen
مَسَّهُ
massahutouches him
ٱلشَّرُّ
l-sharuthe evil
جَزُوعًۭا
jazūʿandistressed
٢٠
(20)
When evil touches him, impatient,

21
وَإِذَا
wa-idhāAnd when
مَسَّهُ
massahutouches him
ٱلْخَيْرُ
l-khayruthe good
مَنُوعًا
manūʿanwithholding
٢١
(21)
And when good touches him, withholding [of it],

22
إِلَّا
illāExcept
ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
l-muṣalīnathose who pray
٢٢
(22)
Except the observers of prayer -

ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīnaThose who
هُمْ
hum[they]
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāat
صَلَاتِهِمْ
ṣalātihimtheir prayer
دَآئِمُونَ
dāimūna(are) constant
٢٣
(23)
Those who are constant in their prayer

وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīnaAnd those who
فِىٓ
in
أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ
amwālihimtheir wealth
حَقٌّۭ
ḥaqqun(is) a right
مَّعْلُومٌۭ
maʿlūmunknown
٢٤
(24)
And those within whose wealth is a known right

لِّلسَّآئِلِ
lilssāiliFor the one who asks
وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ
wal-maḥrūmiand the deprived
٢٥
(25)
For the petitioner and the deprived -

وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīnaAnd those who
يُصَدِّقُونَ
yuṣaddiqūnaaccept (the) truth
بِيَوْمِ
biyawmi(of the) Day
ٱلدِّينِ
l-dīni(of) the Judgment
٢٦
(26)
And those who believe in the Day of Recompense

وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُم
hum[they]
مِّنْ
minof
عَذَابِ
ʿadhābi(the) punishment
رَبِّهِم
rabbihim(of) their Lord
مُّشْفِقُونَ
mush'fiqūna(are) fearful
٢٧
(27)
And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -

إِنَّ
innaIndeed
عَذَابَ
ʿadhāba(the) punishment
رَبِّهِمْ
rabbihim(of) your Lord
غَيْرُ
ghayru(is) not
مَأْمُونٍۢ
mamūninto be felt secure (of)
٢٨
(28)
Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -

وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمْ
hum[they]
لِفُرُوجِهِمْ
lifurūjihimtheir modesty
حَـٰفِظُونَ
ḥāfiẓūna(are) guardians
٢٩
(29)
And those who guard their private parts

إِلَّا
illāExcept
عَلَىٰٓ
ʿalāfrom
أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ
azwājihimtheir spouses
أَوْ
awor
مَا
what
مَلَكَتْ
malakatthey possess
أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ
aymānuhumrightfully
فَإِنَّهُمْ
fa-innahumthen indeed, they
غَيْرُ
ghayru(are) not
مَلُومِينَ
malūmīnablameworthy
٣٠
(30)
Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed -

فَمَنِ
famaniBut whoever
ٱبْتَغَىٰ
ib'taghāseeks
وَرَآءَ
warāabeyond
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālikathat
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ
fa-ulāikathen those
هُمُ
humu[they]
ٱلْعَادُونَ
l-ʿādūna(are) the transgressors
٣١
(31)
But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -

وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمْ
hum[they]
لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ
li-amānātihimof their trusts
وَعَهْدِهِمْ
waʿahdihimand their promise
رَٰعُونَ
rāʿūna(are) observers
٣٢
(32)
And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive

وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُم
hum[they]
بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ
bishahādātihimin their testimonies
قَآئِمُونَ
qāimūnastand firm
٣٣
(33)
And those who are in their testimonies upright

وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمْ
hum[they]
عَلَىٰ
ʿalāon
صَلَاتِهِمْ
ṣalātihimtheir prayer
يُحَافِظُونَ
yuḥāfiẓūnakeep a guard
٣٤
(34)
And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ
ulāikaThose
فِى
(will be) in
جَنَّـٰتٍۢ
jannātinGardens
مُّكْرَمُونَ
muk'ramūnahonored
٣٥
(35)
They will be in gardens, honored.

36
فَمَالِ
famāliSo what is with
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīnathose who
كَفَرُوا۟
kafarūdisbelieve
قِبَلَكَ
qibalakabefore you
مُهْطِعِينَ
muh'ṭiʿīna(they) hasten
٣٦
(36)
So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muḥammad],

عَنِ
ʿaniOn
ٱلْيَمِينِ
l-yamīnithe right
وَعَنِ
waʿaniand on
ٱلشِّمَالِ
l-shimālithe left
عِزِينَ
ʿizīna(in) separate groups
٣٧
(37)
[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?

أَيَطْمَعُ
ayaṭmaʿuDoes long
كُلُّ
kulluevery
ٱمْرِئٍۢ
im'ri-inperson
مِّنْهُمْ
min'humamong them
أَن
anthat
يُدْخَلَ
yud'khalahe enters
جَنَّةَ
jannataa Garden
نَعِيمٍۢ
naʿīmin(of) Delight
٣٨
(38)
Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?

39
كَلَّآ ۖ
kallāBy no means
إِنَّا
innāIndeed, We
خَلَقْنَـٰهُم
khalaqnāhum[We] have created them
مِّمَّا
mimmāfrom what
يَعْلَمُونَ
yaʿlamūnathey know
٣٩
(39)
No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.

فَلَآ
falāBut nay
أُقْسِمُ
uq'simuI swear
بِرَبِّ
birabbiby (the) Lord
ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ
l-mashāriqi(of) the risings
وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ
wal-maghāribiand the settings
إِنَّا
innāthat We
لَقَـٰدِرُونَ
laqādirūna(are) surely Able
٤٠
(40)
So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able

عَلَىٰٓ
ʿalā[On]
أَن
anto
نُّبَدِّلَ
nubaddila[We] replace
خَيْرًۭا
khayran(with) better
مِّنْهُمْ
min'humthan them
وَمَا
wamāand not
نَحْنُ
naḥnuWe
بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
bimasbūqīna(are) to be outrun
٤١
(41)
To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.

فَذَرْهُمْ
fadharhumSo leave them
يَخُوضُوا۟
yakhūḍū(to) converse vainly
وَيَلْعَبُوا۟
wayalʿabūand amuse themselves
حَتَّىٰ
ḥattāuntil
يُلَـٰقُوا۟
yulāqūthey meet
يَوْمَهُمُ
yawmahumutheir Day
ٱلَّذِى
alladhīwhich
يُوعَدُونَ
yūʿadūnathey are promised
٤٢
(42)
So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -

يَوْمَ
yawma(The) Day
يَخْرُجُونَ
yakhrujūnathey will come out
مِنَ
minafrom
ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ
l-ajdāthithe graves
سِرَاعًۭا
sirāʿanrapidly
كَأَنَّهُمْ
ka-annahumas if they (were)
إِلَىٰ
ilāto
نُصُبٍۢ
nuṣubina goal
يُوفِضُونَ
yūfiḍūnahastening
٤٣
(43)
The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.

خَـٰشِعَةً
khāshiʿatanHumbled
أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ
abṣāruhumtheir eyesights
تَرْهَقُهُمْ
tarhaquhumwill cover them
ذِلَّةٌۭ ۚ
dhillatunhumiliation
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālikaThat
ٱلْيَوْمُ
l-yawmu(is) the Day
ٱلَّذِى
alladhīwhich
كَانُوا۟
kānūthey were
يُوعَدُونَ
yūʿadūnapromised
٤٤
(44)
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.
